Neal,
I'm so glad that a Carolina Caskey has the list! All the postings seem to
be from the Pennsylvania or Ohio area and/or involved with people who came
to this country long after my Caskeys were here. My maternal great
grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Caskey from Lancaster County, SC, b. 1844,
m. John Brazington Shannon in Union County, NC in 1861, had 16 children with
him, d. 1916 Mecklenburg Co., NC.
She is said to have been an orphan who was raised by an aunt, Martha Caskey
b. 1819. I suspect she was actually Martha's daughter out of wedlock. I
have not been able to find out anything about them.
Coincidentally, the last 3 children of my grandmother, Fannie Shannon
Matthews (one of Sarah and John Shannon's daughters), retired to the
Abernethy Center near you. They are my mother, Sarah Caskey Matthews
McLeod, who died in 1997 at 86, my aunt Kate Matthews Howie, who is still
very independent at 91, and Frances Matthews Pettus, 87, who unfortunately
has Alzheimer's.
My Aunt Kate is somewhat interested in genealogy, but her focus is pretty
well limited to the paternal forebears of her father John Moses Matthews of
the Providence community in south Mecklenburg. I suspect this maybe
influenced by the possible illegitemacy of both her grandmothers -- Sarah
Caskey and Eliza Hagins, who was also an "orphan" raised by an "aunt"
from
the Lancaster, SC area.
We are very familiar with the Dellinger name from Catawba County -- I seem
to remember they had a department store where my mother and aunt shopped in
the 1980s.
Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: New List owner
Good Morning,
I'm the new list owner and want to introduce myself. My name is Neal
Caskey.
When I took over the list I was unaware that there was any subscriber.
I
thought I would have to build it from scratch. Glad to know I'm not alone
here. In order to get aquanted let all introduce ourselves with a Roll
Call.
Thanks Neal
