Carla, notice that Andrea states there was a james Cashon who served as a Revolutionary
Soldier. Might be interesting to check it out.
The following notes were complied by Leonardo Andrea for Mrs. James E. Holmes (nee
Florence Cashin) and are dates 1950 and July 1965. I only have 47 pages, but understand
there is more to the report. Mr. Andrea begins the report by explaining who his client
was and how they determined to research the name Cashin. Later in this report Mr. Andrea
tells us how they traveled to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Virginia in search of Mrs.
Holmes ancestors and how after a long period of time they discovered that they were
looking at the wrong family. He discovered that Mrs. Holmes’ Cashins came from Ireland in
the early 1800’s and were not related (as far as he knew) to the Cashon/Cashions who
originated in Chesterfield County, Virginia. At that point of course he dropped his
Cashon research, but along the way he left us some good research tools – and the operative
word here is tools. While most of the following information can be documented, it always
should be documented before being included in the family history. Some of Mr. Andrea’s
notes suggest his findings and some of them suggest trails he planned to follow until he
realized he was on the wrong path all together.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"

Mr. Andrea’s notes are arranged according to the individual they pertain to, or labled
“unknown connection” for easier reading. I have used Mr. Andrea’s numbering system.
Notes in ( ) belong to Mr. Andrea. Notes in [ ] belong to me.

Margaret, Sarah, Thomas, William, Elizabeth, Phoebe
“My eldest son, James is to have the 100 acres land where he now lives” [This is not
correct. James the father does not state that James II is his eldest son. The will
reads, “Item I give and bequeath to my son James Cashon one hundred acres of land and
plantation whereon he now lives to him and his heirs and assigns forever”. And he
appointed both James and Thomas to be the executors of his will.] Wit. THOMAS JONES, JOHN

1-302 Chesterfield Co. Va. - William Cathon/Cashon Inventory of estate - rest of papers
missing as well as date, it was about 5-8-1760 [Andrea thinks this may have been a brother
of James, or possibly his father as James Cathon/Cashon was administrator. After looking
at it I think this was Cathon and neither William or James were connected to the family.
For one thing other Cathons are listed in the 1760 census of the Virginia census along
with James Cashoon]

been proven. The deed was abstracted because of the reference to JAMES CASHON.]

The Rev. Jean Casion which in English was John Cashion - was a minister in the Huguenot
French Church - He came with a colony of French Huguenots to London, England and in 1714
sailed with his flock from London to Manakin, Virginia and settled on the James River
111A - The Rev. Jean Casion came to Va. in 1714. He was a native of France - He settled on
the James River opposite Chesterfield County, Va. - the Va. Historical Commission staff
thinks that he is the father of James Cashion #83 and the ancestor of Mrs. Holmes. We
were unable to find the data on the Rev. Jean Casion which in English was the Rev. John
Cashion - They advised us to have the French Huguenot Society of America searched.

Rev. Jean Cairon, French minister - the original will is written in French signed May1,
1715, proven Feb.6, 1716 - late citizen of Cauorsses in Querey in France - no wife
mentioned - children none aged 21: Peter Cairon and Ex., Isaac Cairon, Daniel Cairon Wit
Abraham Salle, J. Amonnet and Jean Forguerand.[Note here the difference in spelling from
Casion to Cairon, which is the correct spelling. Casion certainly could have translated to
Cashon, Cairon, would not have.]
#139a
This is likely the same Rev. Jean Casion #111a- when will was translated they evidently
got the spelling from the French wrong - this was in what is now Chesterfield County.

Jean Cairon, minister - Jean Cairon, ne a Figeae, a cervant minister de Cagars dans la
Haute Guyene - He was one of the ministers who took refuge in Zurich in 1688 - will
probated in Henrico Co, Va. 1719-20
[Since JAMES I was not listed in Jean Cairon’s will, even as a guardian of the minor sons,
I doubt he was descended from Jean Cairon. Also, Cashon researcher John Cashion points
out the French who were allotted grants in Chesterfield County were given 133 acres per
person in the family. If James Cashon has been a son of Jean Cairon he would have had
more or less land, not 200 acres which he patented in 1723.]

I did not check the # of slaves owned by any of the CASHIONS except for WILLIAM CASHION -
the other CASHIONS on Tax lists BURWELL, THOMAS SR., THOMAS JR., JAMES JR. son of JAMES
SR., JOEL all listed from 1 to 5 slaves each - None owned over 5 slaves up to 1800 -
WILLIAM CASHION SR. owned in 1783 only 3 slaves but by 1786 he owned 15 slaves - His son,
DAVID CASHION and his son JAMES CASHION owned one and two slaves each [Researchers into
the Cashon family have not been able to verify these records of William owning over 5
slaves so I don't know where Mr. Andrea got this information and am skeptical of it.]

Tax returns for Chesterfield County, Va.
We were unable to secure all the early Tax Return Books for Chesterfield County, Va. Since
some were being used by other people at the time. Separate Books were used for the
Personal and for the Land Taxes. WILLIAM CASHION in 1786 on his tax returns, 9 in family -
1 poll for himself, 15 slaves and two slaves subject to poll tax, 11 horses and 33 cattle
– We did not have land tax return for that year - this WILLIAM CASHION disappears from
Chesterfield County, Va. after 1786, I do not know where he removed to- There is no record
of any sale for deed for any land of WILLIAM CASHION – I presume that he owned land since
he had 15 slaves – In 1786 also a tax return for JAMES CASHION, son of WILLIAM CASHION – 1
poll and 1 horse – This JAMES, son of WILLIAM also disappears in 1787 – See #81
#124
WILLIAM CASHION - either a son or a grandson of JAMES CASHION #83, but likely a son for
where SARAH CASHION #85 made her will in 1761 was alive – From census #81 he had himself
and wife and seven children – From his other’s will we have the names of four of the
children as follows DAVID CASHON, SARAH CASHON, JEMIMA CASHON, MARY CASHON. And from the
Tax Returns #115 we know he had a son, JAMES CASHON. I do not know who the other children
were – I take JESSE CASHPN #91b as a possible son, but I think his marriage date is too
late for him to be a son of William – I wonder if this WILLIAM CASHON #69b also removed to
Weekly County, Tennessee with his son, DAVID CASHON #69b. This WILLIAM CASHON was the
wealthiest of the CASHION men – He does not appear in Chesterfield County after 1786

WILLIAM CASHION (Son of James Sr. #83) married MARTHA MANN, daughter of FRANCIS and

returns, SARAH was a daughter in the MANN will [actually she was grand daughter in SARAH
CASHON’S will and this SARAH in the MANN will was the daughter of DAVID CASHON and MARTHA
MANN CASHON], DAVID was a son in other data, JOEL was a brother of DAVID - The data in
Chesterfield County shows WILLIAM CASHION had seven children
#93 - [5-156 Chesterfield County, Virginia] – Mrs. Obedience Mann, widow her will signed
May 8, 1788 – children – MARTHA CASHON, Lucy Jackson, Edith Mann, Archibald Mann, executor
and son – Husband, Francis Mann who died in 1782 – granddaughter, SARAH CASHON
#93A – Who was the husband of this Martha Mann Cashon [Martha Mann married David Cashon,
Williams’ son – land deeds help to show this and I am not sure Francis Mann who died in
1782 was Obedience’s husband or that Archibald was her son
#160
Where did old WILLIAM CASHION #158 remove to when he sold all of his land in Chesterfield
County, Va. in 1786 [there are not records, as Mr. Andrea said earlier to show William did
sell all his land in Virginia] - he was the only large slaveholder among the Cashions of
Chesterfield County, Va.

and removed to Mecklenburg County, N. C.
#121b – From 1801 thru 1805 only two Cashions make tax returns – JOEL CASHION, SAMUEL
CASHION – This SAMUEL CASHION was son of THOMAS I CASHION SR. [son of JAMES I] #88 while
JOEL CASHION was son of JAMES II CASHION SR. #86 and a brother of BURRELL– SAMUEL CASHION
also removes from Chesterfield County about 1825 – This left only JOEL CASHION of all the
Cashions, to remain in Chesterfield County, Va. – He is the ancestor of Mr. Lee Cashion
#90 who still resides on part of the old JAMES I CASHION land #83

– He had a reason for not returning to Virginia
#90 – We drove out to the home of Mr. Lee Cashion some 10 miles from Chesterfield C.H. –
His is the only set of Cashions still residing in Chesterfield County – His grandfather
was Joel Cashion Jr. – He owns lands which have been in the Cashion family for more than
200 years.
[MISCELANIOUS NOTES FROM MR. ANDREA’S REPORT]
Person Reference
James I – is referring to James Cashon the first acknowledged ancestor in Virginia
James II – is referring to James Cashon the son of James I and his wife Sarah ? Cashon
James III – is referring to James Cashon son of William and his wife Avis Whitaker Rudd
Cashon. (This James Cashon is also claimed as the son of James II and his wife Ann
Parkenson. However, Amelia County Tax records show him the son of William. And
researchers such as Mrs. Urple Cashion Taylor never added James III to her direct line
that was through James II’s son Joel.)
Thomas I – is referring to Thomas Cashon the son of James I and wife Sarah ? Cashon
Thomas II – is referring to Thomas Cashon the son of Thomas and Frances Wilkerson Cashon
Thomas III – is referring to Thomas Cashon the son of Thomas and Tabitha (Traylor) Cashon
William – is referring to the son of James Cashon and Sarah ? Cashon [there is some
dispute as to whether William had a son William, but I have never found documentation to
show that he did].
The first twenty-one notes in this report deal with Mr. Andrea getting his facts together
for Mrs. Holmes line and at this point they don’t deal with Cashon/Cashion line so I am
omitting them.
22 – North Carolina, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes and I, traveled thru some forth eastern and mid
central N. C. counties and never once did we find a single Cashin name until we got to
Mecklenburg County, N. C.
BURWELL CASHON [son of JAMES II/JAMESI]
#24 – BURWELL CASHON – Revolutionary Pension and stated Burrell or Burwell Cashon was born
in Chesterfield County, Virginia and came in 1800 to Mecklenburg County, N. C. and that he
was a brother of Thomas #23. [Burrell was not a brother of Thomas II, nor did they claim
any relationship I could find in their pension papers. They were cousins.]
#41 – (19060 – Book 19 pg. 60) – BURRELL CASHON (#24) a deed to JOHN CASHON, his son, 52

1802, MARY CASHON m. THOMAS SHEPHARD in 1803, JOEL CASHON #62 could be a son of Burrell

Mecklenburg County, N.C. state they are well acquainted with Burrell Cashon. Stephen
Archer states he was a neighbor of Burrell Cashon in Virginia and knew him – Burrell
Cashon is now aged 74 years. Thomas Cashon states it is his personal knowledge that
Burrell Cashon served in the Revolution – This is his brother it seemed.
#148 – Mrs. J.C. Caldwell (nee Blanch Cashion) of Charlotte, N.C. is a member of the DAR
thru the service of Burrell Cashion and his wife Judith Cashion – She sent Bible records

CHANGE - #143 – I stated that the John Cashion in #38 who married Dorothy Tucker was the
son of Burrell Cashion – But not so unless he married twice – For above we see that John
Cashion married Wilmuth Loftis – Also note #381 (2nd 38) Wilmoth Cashion and I took her to
be a “him” it is likely the Wilmuth Loftis Cashion in #148: [He done good once he looked
at the information.]
JOHN CASHON [son of BURRELL/JAMES II/JAMES I]
#32 – (AC-652) – JOHN CASHON – His estate administered Sept. 5th, 1845 by MARGARET CASHON
(Margaret Wilmuth Loftis married John in 1812) – Final settlement made January 8th, 1849,
but the book with final settlement is missing.
#33 – (6-513) – JOHN CASHON Estate – WILLIAM CASHON named guardian for the minor; JAMES
CASHON – Date missing but I think it is part of the Estate of John #32.
[William Cashon was John’s son about age 30, James would have been about 17 when their
father, John died.]
#38a – (3-96) – in Iredell County, N.C.
WILMOTH CASHION – His will signed July 24, 1855 – no wife mentioned. All estate to “My
son” JAMES A. CASHION and Ex. Wit. Robert F. Bell and Absalom Sherrill [This of course
wasn’t “his” will, but “her” will. Wilmoth Loftis Cashon wife of John Cashon.]
#54 – (4 new- 55) – DAVID R. DUNLAP as Master in Equity – May 15, 1848 – a dower of 88
acres of land to MRS. MARGARET CASHON (This is Wilmuth Loftis Cashon), widow of JOHN
CASHON, deceased. She as MRS. MARGARET CASHON 4- 56 in a deed signed Jan. 31, 1852 sells
this dower of 88 acres to JOHN A. DEWEESE. Wit E.B.D. SLOAN & J. A. CASHON [This is
her son, James A. Cashon who she left her estate to #38A] – Her son, WILLIAM H. CASHON
joins in deed later.
#55 – (new 4 – 99) – WILLIAM H. CASHON – a deed signed May 6, 1859 to JOHN A. DEWEESE for
all my interest in the 88 acre dower set off for my mother, MARGARET CASHON and lands of
my deceased father, JOHN CASHON. Wit. JAMES S. JOHNSTON & M.E. CALDWELL
#56 – (new 4 – 205) – THOMAS C. CASHION of Williamson County, Texas and JAMES A. CASHION
of Williamson County, Texas – dated (Forgot to check date but in Book 4 all dates along
1859-60) Power of Attorney to JAMES MASON of York County, South Carolina – To sell for us
the 50 acres of land which was our part in the division of the lands of THOMAS COROTHERS
our deceased grandfather of Mecklenburg County, N.C. and which came to us as our share
through our deceased mother (Her name not given. Wit. A. R. ALEXANDER of Williamson
County, Texas [Unknown connection]
#57 – (New 6 – 560) – Heirs of JOHN CASHON (BURRELL/JAMES II/JAMES I), deceased – a deed
signed Nov. 16, 1861 to JOHN DEWEESE – All our interest in the lands of our deceased
father, JOHN CASHON – See # 54 and #55 – Signed by his children, BURWELL CASHION of
Mecklenburg County, N.C., JOHN A. CASHION of Iredell County, N.C., JAMES A. CASHION of
Mecklenburg County, N. C. – see him in #56 in Texas [I don’t think so, think that is a
different line of Cashions], MARY A. CASHION, wife of THOMAS DENTON of Iredell County,
N.C.. Wit. William Maxwell and S. B. Hollbrooks
#58 – Further study on JOHN CASHON
From #38 we see where a JOHN CASHON married DOLLY TUCKER in 1801 – We
see in #41 where BURRELL CASHON deeded lands to his son, JOHN CASHON - JOHN CASHON’S first
wife likely died and he married MARGARET ? FOR SEE #32 where JOHN CASHON was dead by 1845
– In #54 we find where her dower was set off for 88 acres – Then her son WILLIAM H.
CASHION is in 1859 or 60 selling his share in that dower – Then in #57 we find the other
children of JOHN CASHION selling land, BURRELL, JOHN A., JAMES A. MARY A. and they may
have been by first wife DOLLY TUCKER – Only WILLIAM H. CASHON deeds lands of his mother as
noted in #55 and we know all of these were children of JOHN CASHON. [As you can see here,
Mr. Andrea is trying to work it all together – he has not yet discovered the Burrell
Cashion family Bible that would have straightened this all out in his mind. This is why
one needs to check and recheck his facts and theories. There were two John Cashons one
the son of William married Dolly Tucker and the other John, son of Burrell married
Margaret Wilmuth Loftis]
#59 – JAMES A. CASHON of Williamson County, Texas in #56 I see now is not the same JAMES A
CASHION of Mecklenburg County, N.C. in #57. Evidently in this generation two men by name
of JAMES A. CASHION [see he gets it right as he studies it]
#64 – See #59 – JAMES A. CASHION - One JAMES A CASHION went to Williamson County, Texas –
The one to Texas was a grandson of Thomas Corothers – The other may have been son of
WILMOTH CASHION #38 who had a son JAMES A. CASHION as did JOHN CASHON. [Wilmoth and John –
husband and wife, JAMES A. son]
#29 – (4-99) MRS. DICEY WORSHAM (WASHAM) – JOHN CASHON was executor and reported on
accounts at July Court 1842. [Dicey was probably the sister of BURWELL CASHON, married
JOHN WORSHAM. JOHN CASHON the executor mentioned was the son of BURWELL CASHON]
#30 – (8-123) – WILLIAM DEWEESE – Estate Adminstration. BURRELL CASHON, Executor.
Accounts presented at July Court 1860 and final settlement made January Court 1862 – We
did not examine to see if list of heirs. (This is BURRELL CASHON/JOHN CASHON/BURWELL
CASHON/JAMES II/JAMES I. He married Cashterine Deweese in 1839. Don’t know who William
Deweese was..)
#60 (new 8 – 357) – BURRELL CASHIN [JOHN/BURRELL/JAMES II/JAMES I] and his wife CATHANNE
CASHIN (First time as Cashin) two deeds and dated July 6, 1869 – First deed to Godfrey
Phining for 250 acres and second deed to G. M. Freeman for 250 acres. Wit W.H. Mack and
Alfred Fisher – This was the interest of his wife in DEWEESE lands – see #38 where BURWELL
CASHON wed CATHERINE DEWEESE in 1839
THOMAS II CASHON [son of THOMAS I/JAMES I]
#104 – (15-411 Chesterfield County, Va.) – THOMAS II CASHIN and his wife, TABITHA CASHIN
(see #103a) a deed signed Nov. 24, 1801 to Henry Turpin – a deed for 110 acres of land by
the lands of Thomas Martin, Francis Lockett and Francis Patran, William Puckett and Samuel
Cashin – Wit David N. Miller, Allen Whitworth and Eleazer Cheatham. This is Thomas
Cashin, Revolutionary soldier #69-3 – He in his pension paper #23
#102 – Haley Talbot – His will signed Dec. 2, 1797 – Wife called simply “My beloved wife”
– children – Thomas (executor), William (executor), Haley Jr., Peter, Tabitha*. Exceutor
my brother Peter Talbot, Wit. Samuel Rudd and Archibald Cheatham.
#103 – Allison Clark – His will signed Aug 5, 1800 – wife, Nancy Clark – Children named
as: Shadrack Clark, Jeremiah Clark, Allison Clark Jr., Phoebe Talbot, granddaughter
Tabitha Talbot – wit. Arthur Graves, Peter Clark and Jeremiah Baugh
#103- #102-a
*We were told that Tabitha Talbot married Thomas Cashion Jr.
[Haley Talbot was married to Frances Rudd who was a cousin of Avis Whitaker Rudd wife of
William Cashon. Haley's will was written in 1797 and he named children: William,
Thomas, Tabitha, Haley Jr., Peter, wife unnamed. In 1800 Peter orphand of Haley chose
Jereemiah Baugh as his guardian. They were closely connected with the Clarks and Rudds
and Cheathams. It is not impossible that Tabitha who married Thomas Jr. was a Talbot.
However since Peter was still a minor in 1800 and Tabitha was born circa 1760, married
circa 1780 it seems odd Haley did not name her as Tabitha Cashon.
I also think that the Phoebe Talbot mentioned in the Clark will was probably married to
one of Haley's sons and the granddaughter Tabitha was their child, not our Tabitha
married to Thomas Jr.
I think Thomas Cashon’s wife Tabitha was the daughter of Archer Traylor who named in his
will of 1800-1801 daughters Judith Cashon and Tabitha Cashon. But I don't know if
either theory will ever be proven. L. Andrea * We were told that Tabitha Talbot married
Thomas Cashion Jr., so he had no proof either.]
#23 – THOMAS CASHON – Revolutionary soldier and born in Chesterfield County, Virginia and
with his wife, TABITHA CASHON removed to Mecklenburg County, N. C. in 1800 – His
Revolutionary pension papers state that THOMAS CASHON and his wife TABITHA CASHON had 8
children and 4 of the children mentioned as – THOMAS CASHON JR., PETER CASHON, LEVI
CASHON, JABEZ CASHON – I do not have full report on this pension, I suggest to Mrs. Holmes
that she write to U. S. Senator George for a summary sheet for the Revolutionary Pension
of THOMAS CASHON who drew his pension in Mecklenburg County, N. C.
#34 – (7-276) – THOMAS III CASHON [son of THOMAS II/THOMAS I/JAMES I]– His estate – Oct.
Court 1857 final settlement by WILLIAM DEWEESE – WILLIAM DEWEESE refers to final
settlement made and reported to Oct. Court 1856 – No book with final settlement was found
– The clerk told us that in Administrations the final settlements were kept in a separate
book and that many of the settlement books are missing.
#35 – (3-109) – THOMAS II CASHON SR. [son of THOMAS I/JAMES I] – His estate (See #23) with
THOMAS CASHON JR. as administrator – May Court 1835 – Final settlement of accounts but not
final division – accounts paid to (some were heirs) – PETER CASHON - $25, THOMAS CASHON
JR. - $80, ROBERT P. WYLIE [husband of ELIZABETH daughter of THOMAS II] - $100, JABY
CASHON - $25, ADAM TORRENCE - $5, SAMUEL CRUSE - $10. Also paid to AGNES ALEXANDER as
guardian for the minor heirs of ALAMARINE ALEXANDER , deceased. [this may be one of his
daughters, but no connection has been proven PETER, THOMAS JR.. and JABY were sons of
THOMAS II]
#127 – Mecklenburg County, N.C. – THOMAS CASHON has a adminstration in Mecklenburg County,
N.C. #34 in the May Court 1835 – We know from what we found in Raleigh in the 1840 census
records that THOMAS CASHIN, the Revolutionary soldiers was alive and aged 76 in 1840 – See
#34 where the Estate of THOMAS CASHON was administered by William Deweese in 1850 and
settled in 1857.
#127a – Note that THOMAS CASHON JR. left Chesterfield County, Va. In 1801 and with wife
Tabitha – He is the Revolutionary soldiers for his pension paper states, wife Tabitha –
This Thomas seems the son of Thomas Cashon #88 but perhaps I may be mistaken – The Thomas
Cashon son of Thomas #88, may be the Thomas Cashon who died in Mecklenburg County, N.C.
circa 1835 – More study will have to be made on these men.
#128 – Perhaps the two Revolutionary soldiers and brothers, THOMAS CASHON born in 1764 and
his brother, BURWELL CASHON born in 1765, were also sons of BURWELL #125 and this BURWELL
a son of JAMES #86 – Also JAMES #86 seemed to have other sons and THOMAS b. 1765 may have
been a son not named in will #86 – Note in #86 a grand daughter named Phoebe and see her
as the Phoebe, daughter of Burrell in #91d [You work it out – it is all just surmise on
Mr. Andrea’s part.]
#129 – From my study in Mecklenburg County, N.C. – I find that the children of THOMAS
CASHON, the Revolutionary soldier began to marry from 1820 to 1840 and also the children
of the other Revolutionary soldier, BURWELL CASHON began to marry from 1820 to 1840 –
Since these two brothers were born in 1765 and 1764 – I wonder about the marriage in #91
of the daughters of Burwell Cashon – One thing stands out, if this is the Burwell, the
Revolutionary soldier who had children marrying from 1799 to 1803, he certainly did marry
VERY YOUNG and his children married VERY YOUNG from his birth 1765 to 1805 was a space of
40 years, which I suppose is possible.
#130 – I found FIVE of the EIGHT children of THOMAS & TABITHA CASHON, the
Revolutionary soldier who was a brother of BURRELL and see #49
#136 – Here in 1830 we find the two Revolutionary soldiers who were brothers – BURWELL
CASHION and THOMAD CASHION – You will note that JAMES CASHION 3135i is almost as old as
Thomas and Burwell – Ten years later in 1840: Burwell Cashion aged 75
Thomas Cashion aged 76 [This is interesting since Thomas is dead.]
According to the pension census of 1840, these two men woul dhave been in 1830 aged
between 60-70 and evidently fibbed a bit about their ages in one year 1830 or in another
year 1840 – census ages are never reliable in some families who contatly fib about their
age, every ten years apaprt – I note that very often in census work – Andrea.
#137 – The THOMAS CASHION who died in #35 in May Court 1835 was likely the THOMAS CASHION
#135e and not the old soldier who was still alive in 1840 – I got in Mecklenburg County,
N.C. #35 for the old soldier when it was for another THOMAS CASHION - #34 is likely for
the old soldier.
#145 -Pension – Thomas Cashon #W.5890 - Applied for his pension in Mecklenburg, NC on Nov.
25, 1833 aged 75 - he stated born in Chesterfield County, Va. in 1758 (this surely is not
the brother of Burrell also born in 1758 and one aged 74 and the other aged 75). He
enlisted in 1777 in Chesterfield and served under Capt Goode, Lt. George Markham, Ens.
James Moody and marched to Portsmouth - Enlisted again in 1778 under Capt Bennett and Gen.
Muhlenburg – In 1780 enlisted again under Capt Edward Booker, Lt John Hill, Ens. Thomas
Covington under Col. Folkner and joined Gen. Gates at Camden and was at the Battle of Gum
Springs when Gates was defeated - He last entered service under Capt Barnett Markham and
marched to Little York where they besieged Lord Cornwallis - He there because acquainted
with General Washington - Col Richardson, Maj. Jones and Gen Lafayette.
Affidavits
Stephen Archer states he was neighbor of Thomas in Va. and NC and knows Thomas served in
Rev.
Rev. Walter S. Pharr states that he is well acquainted with Thomas Cashon and his wife are
both members of the Baptist Church
Mrs. Dicey Worsham states she is a near neighbor of Thomas Cashon and she is his sister.
She knew her brother enlisted and marched to Portsmouth etc.
Burrell Cashon states that he is aged 74 and that he enlisted with Thomas in Va. and that
Thomas is aged 75 and that Thomas moved to Mecklenburg in 1801 the year after he, Burrell
came to N.C. in 1800 – Again on May 21, 1842 Burrell Cashon states he was present in Va.
when Thomas and Tabitha were married.
Mrs. Tabitha Cashion on May 21, 1841 states she is aged 81 years old and that she married
to Thoams Cashon in Virginia on the 31st day of Dec. 1780 – she also states her husband,
Thomas Cashon died in Mecklenburg County, N.C. on the Dec. 16, 1834
Joames Doherty states he is well acquainted with Thomas Cashon
Thomas Cashon Jr. states that his mother, Tabitha Cashon died June 12, 1844 and that he
made her coffin and entered the date in his book
Jan. 30, 1848 Peter Cashion of Cleveland County, N.C. writes a letter (this Peter married
Jemima Cashion daughter of Burrell #143) and with his brother Jabez Cashon of Mecklenburg
County, N.C. – they state there parents were married in Chesterfield County, Va. And that
both the father and mother are now dead – His mother died without having a physician – so
far, her funeral has never been preached although she has been dead four years – Of the
eight children of Thomas Cashon only four are now living (1848) – Peter Cashon, Levi
Cashon, Jabez Cashon, Thomas Cashon – The pension was allowed and paid to Thomas Cashon
Sr. and after his death to his widow, Tabitha Cashon
#146 – From the data on hand – The following are children of Thomas and Tabitha Cashion –
Peter Cashon m. his cousin Jemima (Mimmy) Cashon, Thomas married Sarah Sloam, Hannah
Cashon married Britton Wray, Mary Cashion married Thomas Shepherd, Levi Cashon, Jabez
Cashion, Betsy Cashon married Robert L. Wiley , ___ Cashon married ___ Alexander – at
least Alexanders were heirs, Joel Cashion married in 1811 Susannah Powers – likely a son –
Jaby may have been a nickname for Joel. [This is hard to sort out – Peter, yes, Thomas,
yes, Hannah, questionable, Mary, no, Levi, yes, Jabez [Jaby], yes, Betsy, yes, ___ Cashon
married to ___ Alexander, yes (and her name was probably Alamaria Cashon, Joel, no]
Clarification - Mrs. Dicey Worsham a native of Chesterfield, Va and near neighbor to
applicant and she testified that her brother (Burrell) enlisted and served with Thomas
Cashon in the tour to Portsmouth (Nowhere does it state Thomas and Burrell were brothers!
as Andrea suggested.)
MECKLENBURG LAND DEEDS
#40 – We did not attempt to abstract the deeds where the CASHON bought land unless they
had any genealogical data – Both THOMAS #23 AND BURRELL #24 bought land in 1801 for which
they paid cash. I did not abstract these. Some of the deeds complement the
administrations. Recall that in N.C. after the Revolution, a woman did not sign her dower
right in land when it was sold unless she had an inherited or bought interest in land.
#42 – WASHAM AND CASHON and others came in together it seemed and all settled near
Cornelius N.C. Also SHERRILL (See #38). All were Methodists and we found many buried in
Cornelius Methodist Church Yard and see later on of tombstones copied.
#42– (19-137) – JABY CASHON [THOMAS II/THOMAS I/JAMESI]– a deed signed Jan. 12, 1819 to

acres of land which belonged to the Estate of JOHN CASHON, deceased. We found no
administration for a JOHN CASHON before 1821

mortgage to B. W. ALEXANDER over one sorrel horse with a bald face. One black cow and all
my crops of oats ect and house and kitchen furniture and farming implements ect. And to
cover the $12 which I own to JAMES MCKITT ALEXANDER ect. Wit. MARSHALL L. MELOY. LEVY
CASHON in another deed we did not abstract was residing some 100 miles from Mecklenburg in
the N. C. mountains. (Levy/Thomas II/Thomas I/James I)
#49 – 23-218) – THOMAS II CASHON SR.[THOMAS I/JAMES I] – a deed signed Jan. 9, 1834 (See
#35 and dead by 1835) to THOMAS III CASHON JR. (His son) a Negro boy names Charles aged 12
and a Negro girl Eliza aged 2. Wit. ROBERT P. WILEY then (23-219) – THOMAS CASHON SR. a
deed for a Negro boy named Stanhope aged 10. Wit ROBERT P. WILEY – then (23-223) THOMAS
CASHON SR. a deed Jan. 3, 1834 to ROBERT P. WILEY (Son-in-law – see #38) a slave girl
Levina aged 16 and a slave boy Rufus age 4. Wit JAMES DOHERTY. Also deeds to LEVY CASHON
AND TO JABEZ CASHON.
#49A – See #23 where THOMAS II CASHON SR. had eight children – we now know these
JABEZ CASHON, THOMAS III CASHON JR., LEVY CASHON, PETER CASHON, BETSY CASHON married
ROBERT P. WILEY – In #37 as Robert L. There are other deeds from this set of Cashons to
each other.
50 – (22-171) – THOMAS III CASHON JR. a deed Jan 20, 1830 to ROBERT WILEY. Wit. NATHAN
SIMS AND WILLIAM WILEY (23-439) JABEZ CASHON a deed march 23, 1838 to ROBERT P.
WILEY/THOMAS CASHON JR. – (3-57) PETER CASHON a deed to CYRUS D. ALEXANDER & JOHN A.
CASHIN for a tract on rocky River. Wit BURRELL CASHIN & FIELDING ARCHER. (3-9) JOHN
CASHION a deed March 9, 1848 to CYRUS D. ALEXANDER a tract on Rocky River. Wit. JAMES S.
JOHNSTON & SAMUEL JOHNSTON. Many other deeds like this I did not abstract since they
had no family data.
#22 – North Carolina, Mr. and Mrs. Holmes and I, traveled thru some forth eastern and mid
central N. C. counties and never once did we find a single Cashin name until we got to
Mecklenburg County, N. C.
#25 – In Mecklenburg in June – last week – 1950 I checked fully the records there
MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N. C.
12-536
#26 – DUNNON CASION (Later found as Cashon) and his wife MACSEY CASION – a land deed
signed 9th of Feb. 1785 to Henry Colledge – 28 acres of land on Canee Branch – wit. George
Gabman and Samuel Larking – In other deed DUNNON CASHON and his wife MERCY CASHON deed
all the land they own in Mecklenburg and remove from the county. This is the only Cashon
found in Mecklenburg until 1800 when BURRELL CASHON and his brother, THOMAS CASHON bought
lands – I did not attempt to abstract the lands bought by the Cashons. [Connection
Unknown]

from most of them – These estates will follow.
#31 – (14-489) – J. D. CASHION – His estate administered 2nd Oct., 1933 by A. D. CASHION –
This estate was so late that we did not check it. [Connection unknown]
#36 – (7-386) - JOSEPH L. CASHON – His estate administered, April court 1858 by J. W.
Blair – He seemed a single man and had a small estate – no division for it took all to pay
burial expenses, accounts he owed and medical bills – only $38.04 left which was paid to
J. W. Blair for administering. [Connection Unknown]

THOMAS SHEPHARD Feb. 1, 1803 to MARY CASHON – THOMAS CASHON signed bond. [believe this may
be the brother of NANCY SHEPPARD who married OLIVER CASHON and MARY CASHON may have been
OLIVER’S [son of WILLIAM/JAMES I] sister]

this Jaby might be a son of Jabez or it may be Jabez, widowed and remarrying.]

#38A – All of these older Cashon marriage bonds are likely for the children of Thomas #23
and Burrell #24
#37A – We were told in Charlotte that the Thomas #23 and Burrell #24 Cashon settled near
Cornelius N.C. in the upper part of Mecklenburg County, N.C. and that later Burrell
removed to an adjoining County and did not die in Mecklenburg County – They resided near
the Iredell County line – We checked Iredell and found one Cashon will – Not a single
Cashon entry in Rowan County until after 1900 – Only one early in Iredell County, some
later ones after 1890 which we did not check.
#39 – No Sheppard or Dixon in Iredell County records until after 1890 and in Iredell
County we were unable to locate the early marriage bonds – In Mecklenburg County, N.C. –
No Hunt or Sheppard except in #37 – Many Dixon but we did not abstract for none had a
Piercy Dixon Ellis or any similar first name to Piercey.
#131 – JOHN CASHIN #8 – He has been proved from Chesterfield County, Virginia by Flournoy
deeds in Richmond County, Georgia – From my study in the Chesterfield County, Va. Records
I see no John Cashin, except the Capt. John Cashion who enlisted in last years of the War
of the Revolution.
#132 – Capt. John Cashion of Chesterfield County, Virginia – He wanted to resign his
commission as a captain while they were in the Northwest Territory – For some reason this
was not allowed – He then took leave and was classed as a deserter – He seems to have
completely disappeared in the great Northwest Territory – Whether this is the John Cashin
#8 who came from Illinois to Richmond County, Georgia circa 1810, I do not know, but he
seems the same man – This John Cashin of Illinois and Augusta, Georgia name his first son,
James Cashin, and perhaps for his father who would have been the James #86.
#133 – WILLIAM CASHION #124 could well have been the father of John Cashin #8 of Augusta,
Georgia – This William Cashon was the wealthiest man of the Cashion clam of Chesterfield
County, Va. – It is known that John Cashin of Augusta, Georgia was a wealthy man – His
estate amounted to more than three hundred thousand dollars.
#134 – [is a report of detaigle, a French Catholic Family from Isle de Martinique and has
nothing to do with Cashon family so I am not including it.]
#135 – Mecklenburg County, N.C.
Here is a report by Miss Maybelle Delamar of Raleigh, N.C. on the CASHION families in 1830
in Mecklenburg County, N.C.
JUBE CASHION 40-50 – wife 30-40, 1 boy 15-20, 1 boy 10-15, 1 boy 5-10, 2 boys under 5, 1

#46 – (21-356) – A deed signed Feb. 27, 1827 to JAMES SLOAN one of the heirs of DAVID
SLOAN SR. deceased and for settlement of his estate by deed – We the heirs of DAVID SLOAN
SR. deed our portion to JAMES SLOAN – deed signed by heirs of DAVID SLOAN SR. ALLEN
SLOAN, SOPHIA wife of BENJAMIN WEST, LUCINDA wife of DAVID DOHERTY of Pickens County,
Alabama, SARAH wife of THOMAS II CASHON JR., DAVID SLOAN JR. (married PATSEY CASHON).
James SLOAN the other heir bought the land. Wit. WILLIAM BARNETT & ALLEN CURRY –see
#47
#47 - # New set – 176) – ISABEL CASHON and MARY CURRY a deed signed Feb. 21, 1848 to W. G.
BARNETT – The old Alexander Robinson home place and where ISABEL CASHON lives. We being
the heirs of ALEXANDER ROBINSON, deceased and also heirs to RACHEL ROBINSON, wife of
Alexander. Wit WILLIAM BARNET & H. D. EWART – I do not see in #38 where ISABEL
ROBINSON wed a CASHON. [Connection Unknown]
#51 – MILAS D. CASHION and his wife, HARRIET (BARNHILL) CASHION – A joint deed signed May
14, 1857 to ALEXANDER SPRINGS for our interest in the lands of JOHN BARNHILL, deceased of
which my wife is heir – See #37. Wit. W.H. BATTLE & A.H. MENTON [Connection Unknown]
#52 – J. B. CASHION – a deed to JAMES T. CASHION May 8, 1855 for a tract of 49 acres on
Sugar Creek. Wit. JOSEPH L. CASHION See #36 [Connection Unknown]
#61 (new 6 – 104) – ELISHA CASHION – Robert H. Stinson – and Sydney Johnston of Lincoln
County, N. C. – Feb. 7, 1842 – An agreement over a debt Wit Robert Linier – Then in new 2
– 195 and dated Dec. 7, 1856, ELISHA CASHION sells to Thomas Harry Blakeley and to Sydney
Johnston his still and still house in Mecklenburg. [Connection Unknown Some think
Elisha was the son of Pleasant/David/William/James I, but I believe he was the son of
Oliver/William/James I]
#62 – (new 2- 178) – JOEL CASHION [Jr.} signed March 4, 1847 to Henry W. Conner of Catawba
County, N.C. – a deed of sale for one 4 year old mare and a wagon. Wit William B. Withers
– See #38 where JOEL CASHON married in 1811 to Sucky Powers – He was older and likely son
of either Burrell #24 or Thomas #23. [This Joel was Jr. born circa 1780 in Virginia, died
after 1860 in N.C. His father was Joel also. (JOEL SR./WILLIAM/JAMES I]
#65 – This Family all in the beginning spelled the name Cashon – once or twice the clerk
spelled it Cashan or Cashin, but only one did any sign as Cashin as in #60 – By 1860 all
of the family had begun to spell it as Cashion. [Numerous spelling for Cashon – in one
Chesterfield document there were three different spellings.]
#66 – Not one time did I find a JOHN B.CASHIN #3 and the nearest was in #52 where J.B.
CASHION of Mecklenburg County deeded to JAMES T. CASHION in 1855 – But at that time John
B. Cashin #3 was living in Lowndes County, Georgia and died four years later in 1859 –
This J. B. CASHION #52 distinctly said in deed “of Mecklenburg County, N.C.” and I do not
even know if the initial was “J” for John or what.
#67 – Since your John B. Cashin #3 was dead by 1859, I did not check many of the records
after 1870 and since none had genealogical data on John B. Cashin, I did not abstract
these – I first thought that perhaps in #44 and dated July 31, 1821, that this may be John
Cashin #8 or Richmond County, Ga, but I see John Cashin of Augusta was alive in 1821 and
signed his will in 1822. So this John Cashin in 44 is not the Augusta man – I really
think that this John Cashin dead in 1821 was a son of Thomas Cashion #23 and that he died
a single man and his brother Jabez bought the land.
#68 – On our way from Statesville (Iredell County) to Charlotte, we stopped at Cornelius
N.C. and walked thru the Methodist graveyard. We were told that an older graveyard now
abandoned was some few miles away with some Cashons. We were not able to find it. I
copied the following Cashion gravestones at newer Cornelius Methodist Church.
SARAH CASHION/ Wife of/THOMAS B. WHITE/ 6 April 1862/ 1 Jan. 1925 [Connection Unknown]
W. B. HARWELL/ 10 Sept 1857/16 Jan 1938/His wife/SUSAN L. CASHION/30 Aug. 1855/17 Feb.

HAZEL C. WESTMORELAND/wife of/C.M. CASHION/6 Oct 1894/25 Feb. 1933 [or 40] [Connection
Unknown]
Others we did not copy – also WASHAM – TORRENCE – SHERRILL – and many
#107 – (17-440 Chesterfield County, Va.) – JOHN L. CASON – Non Cupative will spoken July
13, 1847 probated Sept 13, 1847 – Give what I have to my four sisters and to my half
brother (none were named) – Executor to be Otway Reynolds. – wit Samuel H. Ryall and Silas
Cheatham – P.S. I think this may be for a Cashion, but I am not sure – No Cason names in
county. [Connection Unknown – no John L. Cashion in Chesterfield County, at this time that
I can find.}
#108 – 6-367 Chesterfield County, Va.) – Mrs. Sophia Ford – a deed signed July 30, 1800 to
my two grandchildren Elizabeth Coates and William Coates for Love and Affection – Wit
SAMUEL CASHON [THOMAS I/JAMES I], Thomas Miller & SARAH CASHON [Probably Sarah Jackson
widow of Thomas I]
#109 – WORSHAM, BAUGH, PUCKETT, TALBOT, CHEATHAM, CLARK, JONES, HATCHER, PATRAN, ELAM,
GOODE, FLOURNOY, WIATT and other surnames are associated with the CASHION and one will
need to make a complete study of all these surnames to find more data on Cashion – Also a
study of adjoining counties to Chesterfield will have to be made in order to complete the
picture – Also COATES
#109a – GOODE, CHEATHAM, TALBOT, BAUGH, PUCKETT, COATE, FLOURNOY all came to S.C. before
and after the Revolution – BAUGH, GOODE, TALBOT and CHEATHAM and HATCHER were in Edgefield
and across the river in Richmond County, Georgia – PUCKETT AND COATES IN Newberry and
Laurens with BAUGH .
#110 – Flournoy records need a study in Chesterfield and adjoining Henrico Counties – Note
in #8 in Richmond County, Georgia where Thomas Flournoy was a witness to the will of JOHN
CASHIN #8 who made his will and five days later it was probated. People traveled together
and association means much in genealogy – All surnames in #109 were plentiful in
Chesterfield County, Virginia – The Worshams came with Cashions to Mecklenburg County,
N.C.
#138 – Illinois State Archives – The lands in Illinois of John Cashin #12 are located in
Hancock County, Ill.
#138a – 1850 Census Hancock Co, Ill. – John P. Cason age 35 b. Ky, John C. Cashon 15 b.
Ill, Frances A. Cason 11 b. Ill., Thomas I Cason 9 b. Ill. – This Cason is not Cashin and
not the John Cashin in Georgia who was then in Georgia #3. However this Hancock Co., Ill.
Is important for there we ought to be able to find when John B. Cashin sold this land in
Illinois. (Connection Unknown)
#147 – Pension – DAVID CASHIN (see #85) [son of WILLIAM/JAMES I] - #R.1782 – He was born
Feb. 13, 1758 in Chesterfield County, Virginia and applied for his pension Oct. 8, 1832 in
Weakley County, Tennessee – He enlisted in Chesterfield County, Va., and served under
Capt. Francis Goode, Lt. George Markham, and marched to Williamsburg and from there to
Little York and one to Portsmouth – In winter of 1778-89 he enlisted under command of
Robert Elam as guard of prisoners and the magazine 6 miles from Chesterfield – He stated
that the only living persons who knew of his service in Virginia were Thomas and Burrell
Cashion of Mecklenburg County, N.C. and these two made affidavits before a Justice of the
Peace in Mecklenburg County, N.,C. as to this service. David Cashion states “My brother
in Iredell County, N.C. has my father’s old Bible and my birth is in the Bible” [Doesn’t
state that in the pension.] In Iredell county, N.C. a bond signed June 6, 1813 JOEL CASHON
signs for marriage license for David Cashon to Sally Harvell – So this Joel is likely the
brother of David and hence not a son of Thomas in #146 above as I thought. – David Cashon
refers to my brothers which indicates he had more than one brother – he also had sisters.
– After the Revolution David Cashon removed to Cabarrus County, N.C. in 1797 and lived 1
years and moved to Iredell where he lived 5 years and then to Burke County, N.C. where he
lived 5 years and then to Montgomery County, Tennessee in 1807 and lived there 6 years and
then of Sumner County, Tennessee where he lived until 1825 when he moved to Weakley
County, Tennessee – He died in Weakley county Tennessee in June 24, 1835 – The pension was
allowed and paid from Tennessee – His widow, Sarah Cashon died in Weakley County,
Tennessee on Oct. 18, 1851 – David Cashon was married in Iredell County, N.C. in 1788 [not
right] to his wife, Sarah and she was Sarah Harvell – The Rev. Matthew F. Mitchell and
Bassit A. Beadles of Weakley County, Tennessee made affidavits. – The children of David
and Sarah Cashion were as follows: Elza, Elizabeth, Pleasant, Martin, Sophia, Nancy,
Polly, Rebecca, David Jr., Cynthia, Emeline, Pulaski [he left out Anis]
#149 – Oklahoma – ROY CASHION of the Roosevelt Rough Riders in the 1898 War with Spain was
killed on San Juan Hill and was the first Oklahoma schoolboy to give his life for his
county on foreign soil.
#151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157 – deal with locating her John Cashin in Georgia and
plans for checking more records in N.C. and Virginia
#159 – JAMES CASHION #92 married Nancy Weeks – This was in 1784 and two James Cashions
beside the James son of James Sr. show in Chesterfield County, Virginia – One was James
Cashion married Nancy Weeks and other James Cashion son of William Cashion – Then there
was still another James Cashion, grandson of James #83 who was aged between 60-70 in
Mecklenburg County, N.C. in 1830 and likely however the same James with wife Nancy Weeks.
[I think he counted too many James. James I died in 1759 but was still listed in the 1760
created census. James II lived until 1795 – he may have had a James Jr. who signed a deed
in 1782 but it is just as likely that the James Jr. who signed the deed was William’s son
James using the appellation Jr. to differentiate between him and his uncle. Note that
Burrell’s grandson Burrell Cashion used the appellation Jr. until after his grandfather’s
death. James who married Nancy Weeks in Amelia County, Virginia and who shows up in
Person, Iredell and Mecklenburg Counties N.C. is most probably the son of William. I’m
not sure where Mr. Andrea came up with all these James, but I have only found three
possibly four of them at this point. James I, James II, James III son of William, and
possibly James Jr. son of James II.]
