Just in case no one else has come to the same conclusions, here's some food for
thought.
In searching all the censuses, land deeds, wills, etc. I'm thoroughly disgusted and
confused with how often the name "Cashion" is misspelled. Having lived as a
"Cashion", I can tell you it STILL goes on, most often being (mis)spelled
"Cushion" when read by someone trying to copy it down or "Cashen" or
"Cashon" when spoken to someone aloud. This pattern, seen in my own life, seems
to be NOT something new. I've found a will for a James Cashon in 1858 VA that seems to
match most of the ancestral information I've been able to determine for myself.
However...he seems to have hatched from an egg or something since searches for either
spelling produces little or no result. One thread proposes a Thomas Cashion as his
father...but James seems to have been born in Ireland while Thomas hails from late
1600's--early 1700's USA (VA). Transcription errors from most of the censuses
follow the same pattern--especially the older ones from 1880 and before. Even in the
early 20th century!
censuses, I've found at least two spellings of my grandmother's name and three
for "Cashion"--including "Casken" and "Cashier" which match
biological data but not the right spelling.
So...I share this in hope it may help someone else looking for the link across the pond.
Rumor has it, the Cashion clan hails from Ireland and were forcefully immigrated to the US
by the British in the early to mid 1700's.
