Katherine,
Re: Richard W. Cashion's father, William Cashion, was never married twice,
neither was William's father, William Cashion, married twice, so there are no
half brother's or sister's to my knowledge. You and I discussed this some
time ago and I thought we had it straight. If you have info that differs from
this, please let me know as this Richard, William & William are my
grandfather's.
Thanks,
R.L.
Richard,
I just re-read our correspondence (from 1997), and up until Dec 2, 1997 you
were saying that you thought the elder William had married twice, first to
Nancy Taylor and 2nd to Elizabeth Gattis. My GGG grandfather, Andy
Cashion, is presumed to be the son of the first marriage, and your GG
grandfather, William Cashion (Jr.) was the son of William Sr's (possibly)
2nd wife, Elizabeth Gattis. We had discussed how the dates didn't seem to
work out right, and I don't recall coming to any firm conclusions, but I
didn't change my database. Your conclusion was based on a loose slip of
paper found in the Andrew Cashion Bible in the Fayetteville, TN Library.
According to my DB (based in part on information you'd given me, and partly
on some very confusing hand-written records and bad photocopies), William
Cashion who married Elizabeth Sheldon was the son of William Cashion and
Elizabeth Gattis. Are these the same William Cashion? I don't know. But
the children who are attributed to Elizabeth Gattis are included in the
list found in the Andrew Cashion Bible.
The paper from the Andrew Cashion Bible shows Wm Cashion Sr., son of James
Cashion, b. 14 Sep 1787, d. 6 Sep 1841 and Nancy (Taylor?) Cashion b. 24
May 1791 along with:
Milley Cashion born Nov - 5 1811.
Andy Cashion was born Nov. 2 1812
Lettie Cashion was born Dec 21, 1813
Dovey Cashion was born Sep 25, 1815
Polly Cashion was born Jan 11, 1817
Sallie Cashion was born Mar 31, 1818
Betsy Cashion Sep 5: 1819
Leutishia Cashion Feb 10 1821
Clary Cashion July 18, 1822
Ann Cashion Sept 27, 1825
William Cashion Nov 18, 1827
James Cashion July 29, 1828
Now, since a William Cashion had married Elizabeth Gattis in 1839, after
all these children were born, I had long ago postulated a 2nd unknown wife
for William of 1787. This is pure speculation, of course. However, since
i also show Nancy Taylor died ca. 1819 (sorry, no info on where that date
came from), at least some of this list of children had to have a different
mother.
The father of your Richard Wicks Cashion, named William Cashion, appears to
be the William b. 1827, son of William b. 1787, and thus a brother (or
half-brother?) of Andy Cashion.
Maybe the problem is that perhaps Nancy Taylor did not in fact die in 1819?
Maybe she was the mother of all these children, and William married
Elizabeth Gattis after they were all born? If someone mis-transcribed
Nancy's date of death, and that actually occurred in 1829 instead of 1819,
it would all fit. It does seem odd that in this list of children there's
nothing about a 2nd wife for William Sr. I think that's partly the
conclusion you had come to (in essence) in Dec 1997 except you said "I also
beleive that Nancy (Taylor)
Cashion was my great, great grandmother and was the mother of RICHARD WICKS
CASHION." I think that's wrong -- I think you left out a generation there,
and Nancy Taylor was Richard Wicks Cashion's grandmother, not mother.
William Cashion, son of William Cashion Sr and Nancy Taylor, married
Elizabeth Shelton, who was mother of Richard Wicks Cashion.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Katherine
