Colleen thanks for sharing this. It is informative and has made me
stop
and think. I guess I always thought that if a cousin shared "stories" of
the family that putting those sories in the file and sharing them was
alright, added color to the names and dates, but I will certainly be more
careful in the future with what I share and how I do it. Don't want to
step on anyone toes.

If you write the stories in your own words, then you're fine -- it's
copying what someone else has put into tangible form that's violating their
copyright. Unless it's tangible (written on paper, recorded on a computer
disk, etc.) a family story is fair game to include. Copyright protects the
EXPRESSION of an idea, not the idea itself, and not plain facts.
