Hello, group.
I've recently become interested in finding the parents of James Hugh Cashion, my GGG
uncle by marriage. His wife, Martha Idora "Ida" Cashion was the youngest sister
of Cordelia Tennessee Cashion, my GG grandmother.
The reason I'm looking for this family is that it may tie into one that's
connected to another of my distant lines, and I think such connections are just too cool.
The one in question is the Cowans who married into the Walker family of Rockbridge Co.,
VA, known as "Wigton Walkers" because their forebears came from Wigtown,
Scotland (which used to be called Wigton). A number of Cowan brothers married Walker
sisters back in the 1700s in VA/NC, and then moved to TN. It's irrelevant to this
discussion, but I'm connected to the Wigton Walkers through the wife of their most
remote known ancestor, Katherine Rutherford m. John Walker of Wigton, Scotland. Her
brother, James Rutherford, was my 7G grandfather. So, even if I do succeed in making this
link between James Hugh Cowan and the Cowans who intermarried with the Walkers, it's
pretty much a stretch to call them cousins, but you know how genealogy reseach can lead
you down some twisty-turny paths!
Anyway, the information I have about James Hugh Cowan is from two sources:
* a copy of a hand-written note to my gr-aunt Cordelia "Delia" Watson from
Martha Ann Lackey, who referred to "Aunt Mamie" and "Aunt Maude" and
"Granny Cowan", dated 28 Sep 1981.
* a message to the TNLINCOL-L(a)rootsweb.com list from Noveda A. Metzger in Feb 1999, called
³Re: CEMETARY LOOK UP². According to this message (which I've just looked at again
through the Rootweb archive search tool), James Hugh Cowan and Ida Cashion Cowan are
buried in the Rosehill Cemetery in Fayetteville, TN.
Some of the Walker-related Cowans lived in Franklin Co., TN, Tullahoma, TN, and Lincoln
Co., TN, which leads me to think they might be related to James Hugh Cowan, but I
don't know how.
Does anyone on this list have information about these distant Cashion cousins? If you do,
please let me know, either on the list or privately.
Thanks!
Katherine
