Message Board Post:
Bill, the only time I've personally seen the name "Kirschthaler" in
connection with "Cashdollar" was in the article:
Don Yoder, "Problems and Resources in Pennsylvania German Genealogical
Research," The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 31, 1 (1979). (I saw this in Salt
Lake many years ago, and don't have a copy.)
I have found Kirschtalers in 18th Century Pfalz, Bavaria (on IGI, for what it's
worth!). There were also some Kirschthalers in Renssellaer and Ulster Counties, NY, before
1800 [census; IGI]. I have not been able to connect these to any Cashdollars.
One letter I have suggests (without documentation) that the Kirschthalers moved from
Germany to Switzerland, then to France, then to UK. They changed their name to
"Cashdollar" in England, and then moved to the US.
There is a Rootsweb message board entry dated July 12, 2002, that says "I can only go
back as far as Jacob Pedar Kirsdahler born Denmark, lived in Germany, had son John who
used the Cashdollar name and moved from Germany to the USA and settled in western PA.
Kirsch-Dahler is also a spelling as if it was two names." (No documentation of this
was given.)
Another Rootsweb message dated Jul 24, 2002, "I have noticed in an old family Bible
that my sister has that our Cashdollar name came from ancestors born in Denmark, their
children came to the USA from Germany including Pedar Johann Kirschdahler, wife Maria,
both born Jutland, Denmark. Christian Jacob Kirsch-Dahler, wife Anna Jacob Pedar
Kirsch-Dahler, wife Katherine, their children listed as Johann, Anna, Jacob, Christiana,
Pedar, Jacob Peder, John Peter, Margarete, Erik Pedar, Jacob John Peter Jno. Three boys
emigrated to USA from Germany, settling in Mid Altantic states and Western PA. They were
skilled craftsmen, with both farming and mercantile experience." *Again, no
documentation other than the reference to family Bible, which I've not seen.)
Yet another Rootsweb message (I didn't write down the date) points to Germany, Ireland
and Scotland. This message gives Cashdollar clans in PA/NY and NC/TN, and the person was
unable to find any connection, but "some stories relate a possible Connecticut
connection." and "our southern clan's tradition is that "Cash" is
an English variant of "Cass." They are said to have settled around Dollar in
Clackmannan, Scotland, and the Cash Dollar name was later shorted to Cashdollar."
(Naturally no documentation.)
I hope you are now as confused as I am.
