Bill and Kathy:
I found an article, Don Yoder, "Problems and Resources in Pennsylvania
German Genealogical Research," The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine 31, 1
(1979), that says the name comes from Kirschthaler. This sort-of translates
to "man of Cherry Valley." I think.
The first Kirschthalers I have located were in the province of Pfalz,
Bavaria [IGI]. This is about 20 miles southeast of Beyeuth, near the Czech
border. There were Kirschthalers in Renssellaer and Ulster counties, NY,
before 1800 [IGI, census]. I have not discovered any connection between
these various people and Cashdollars, however.
I have an unpub and undated mms from Dorothy Knaell that says the
Kirschthalers moved from Germany to Switzerland, then to France, then to the
British Isles where they changed their name to Cashdollar, and were thought
of as Scotch-Irish. They immigrated to America around 1740-1750. I have been
unable to verify any of this and have no idea where Knaell found it.
My Cashdollars are in Butler County, PA. I have quite a bit of information
about them, and am interested in sharing.

Subject: Kirchthaler or Cashdollar
I am conducting genealogical research into my surname of Cashdollar
and
have reason to believe the name was originally Kirchthaler (or something
similar). I also believe the name may have originated in or around present
day Germany. Do you have any record of the names (Cashdollar or
Kirchthaler) and any link to each other?
PS - I have hundreds of records for Cashdollar and am focusing on links
between Cashdollar and Kirchthaler or info reflecting the name Cashdollar
outside of the US.
Thank you.
Bill
