I have recently come across some research of Diane Elling that I had received a few years
back regarding the death of my great granduncle Samuel Harris Casey, 1861-1897 who was
murdered near Corn Hill, Williamson Co., TX in 1897. He left a widow and 10 children. I
would love to get in touch with any of his direct descendants. I descend from Samuel H.
Casey's brother James Hill Casey ("Hill" or "Peg-Leg" Casey). Sam
Casey's father was Willis Casey, and his uncle was Hugh Casey of Georgetown, who was a
prominent fellow apparently...

Killing of Mr. Sam Casey
On Tuesday night at a party in the vicinity of Corn Hill, a difficulty occurred between
Mr. Sam Casey and Mr. Roberts. In the course of the difficulty Mr. Casey received a
number of cuts, which proved fatal within a short time. Mr. Roberts escaped, and, at the
time the foregoing information was obtained, had not been arrested. Mr. Casey leaves a
wife and ten children. He was a nephew of Mr. Hugh Casey of Georgetown.

Ed Denson Arrested
Sunday morning Constable Taulbee, ex-Sergeant Sullivan, late of the State Rangers, and
Deputy Sheriff Pope of Bell County, arrested at his home in Spring Valley near Youngsport
in Bell County, Ed Denson accused of complicity in the killing of Sam Casey near Corn Hill
Tuesday night week. Denson, who is charged with forcibly preventing Casey's brother
from going to his assistance while being cut to pieces, was brought to Georgetown and
lodged in jail. Since the killing, it is said, he absented himself from home until
Saturday, when the officers were notified of his presence there.

court".

Dist. attorney asked that a fine be imposed upon Ed Denson, Perry Davis, Mrs. E. J.
Tennison, Jennie Chapman, Charles Coe, Bruen (sp.?) Brooks and Ed Mantooth, witnesses -
for disobedience of a Subpoena ....(they were legally subpoenaed to appear and testify in
behalf of defendant Add Roberts. Judgment - to fine Ed Denson and Perry Davis $300 each
- others $100 each unless they show cause why this judgment should not be made). All
ordered to testify at trial continued to 27 Jan. 1899.
Bk 4 - pg. 429
Defendant pleaded "not guilty". Jury returned guilty verdict - second degree
murder - assess punishment at 5 years in State Penitentiary.
