Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I do know a bit about genetic testing
through my work. As one person asked me by backchannel, I'll say a bit
more. The kind of testing that would prove most useful would involve testing
male descendants of Casey lines, looking at markers on the Y-chromosome,
which only males have. Perhaps the most daunting obstacle is the cost, at
about $200 for a 24 marker test (some less expensive tests only involve a
few markers, but they are not as useful in determining genetic relations -
more is better). The testing itself is easy, involving a cotton swab of the
inside of the cheek - no needles!
I will take a look at the various sites that you all have suggested, to see
if there is already an ongoing program for testing Casey's, and I'll let
everyone know what I have found.
As I get the digest but not the full message-by-message listings, I
apologize for not responding faster.

With respect to unknown links to Abner Casey (and others), has there been
any discussion of getting genetic testing of Casey men currently alive who
represent different Casey lines to determine whether they are in fact likely
to descend from the same person? I have only been following the discussion
list for less than a year, so I apologize if this idea has been mentioned
previously and rejected.

Hi Rita,
I definitely want to do this! I have one brother who is willing but I can't
remember the links to find out how to order the genetic testing. Do you have
that info?

Rita, I don't recall that this has been mentioned on the Casey list
(probably a search of the List archives would remind us), but there are
several surname lists and groups who are currently engaged in genetic
testing projects. From what I've read, it requires concerted effort for
a group to gather, organize and report the complex results in an
organized fashion and requires a baseline of proven male (Casey)
lineages to compare against. Someone needs to be the leader/organizer in
a group project. For more reading and to see how others have approached
this, you might check the Surname category on the Cyndi's List site and
drill down further--several projects have websites with links to more
detailed information. There are several commercial enterprises doing
genetic research, but I've heard that the "Family Tree DNA" company is
good. Their web site link:
familytreedna.com
Here's the group of surnames mentioned in Cyndi's List:
http://www.cyndislist.com/dna.htm#Surname
Also, a general Rootsweb mailing list search could probably pinpoint
several lists where their genetic research efforts are being discussed.
One of them I belong to is conducting a project now but so far there are
relatively few participants.

Log onto the HILL-L list, they have a great site. Just write to the
Listmaster, Bryon Hill. They even have a site that gives results.

Rita,
I think this is where you can subscribe to a DNA List.
