CASEY; IRL>PA,USA; 1835-
John Charles "Charlie" CASEY was thought to have been born about 1835 in
Ireland. He married Elizabeth RILEY also understood to have been born
in Ireland. It is believed that they were married in Ireland before
coming to the United States. John and Elizabeth had three children:
Lizzie CASEY; Edmund CASEY; and, John Charles CASEY, Jr. believed to
have been born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA. Little is known of
Lizzie and Edmund other than that they attended Duquesne University
(then Holy Ghost College) and neither ever married. Charlie was a
cooper on the Pittsburgh wharf and drove a team pulling a wagon to
deliver his barrels, hogsheads and casks. He was killed while
delivering a 500-lb. barrel of flour to the T.C. Jenkins arcade in
mid-town. He was rolling the barrel and backed into an open elevator
shaft. The barrel landed on top of him crushing him. Elizabeth died of
a heart attack late in life trying to rescue a drunk. At the time
Elizabeth and her children lived in Troy Hill on the North Side and
owned a number of row houses. The drunk had passed her on his way home
then fell off the porch of his house. Elizabeth thought he was dead or
dying and tried to pick him up to carry him to a priest for last rites.
She is reported to have died happy since a priest was already enroute.
The drunk recovered.
John Charles "Charlie" CASEY II married Katherine DOHLMAN, daughter of
Andy DOHLMAN of Pittsburgh and Katherine Magdalena BREUNINGER who had
been born March 23, 1838 in Wuerttemberg, Germany and who had come to
the United States at the age of 22. This Charlie was a member of the
Pittsburgh police and is believed to have died of cancer late in life.
Katherine was senile for the last two years of her life and died at the
age of 73.
Charlie CASEY II and Katherine Dohlman CASEY had two children: John
Charles "Charlie" CASEY III, born about November 27, 1875 in the
Birmingham neighborhood (now called the South Side) of Pittsburgh; and,
Mary Ann "Mamie" CASEY, born about 1877, also in Birmingham.
Mary Ann CASEY married a Bob McCURTY of Pittsburgh and they had at least
one child, a son, who was stillborn.
Charlie CASEY III was a printer/engraver who made stock certificates and
bank notes. Charlie married Delia or Bedelia McGRAW/McGRATH daughter of
Michael McGRAW/McGRATH and Julia GARRIHTY. Delia had been born in
Ireland in about 1873 and her brother James "Jim" was born there the
following year. Soon thereafter the young family emigrated to the
United States coming in through Ellis Island in about 1876 settling
initially near what is now Mercy Hospital near the Boulevard of the
Allies. The remaining 11 siblings were born in Pittsburgh. The birth
order of the remaining children was 4 boys then Mary then 5 boys and
finally Julia. Regis was a twin and his brother died in infancy. The
family eventually lived in Pittsburgh's Soho neighborhood.
Charlie & Delia CASEY had four daughters: Katherine Rose CASEY, born
1910; Julia Eileen CASEY, born July 4, 1912; Elizabeth CASEY, born
November 14, 1914; and, Dolores Marian CASEY, born December 14, 1916.
Charlie CASEY died November 27, 1917 during a flu epidemic when his
youngest daughter was still less than a year old. About two years after
becoming a widow. Delia CASEY married George SMITH, but the marriage
lasted less than 2 years before ending in divorce after an incident
where George beat Dolores. George had 5 boys and a girl, Bessie, from a
previous marriage.
Katherine Marie "Kay" CASEY eloped with Robert "Bob" MERTZ, a truck
driver, in about 1934. They lived their whole lives in the Oakland
neighborhood. Bob and Kay had two children: Virginia MERTZ, born in
1935; and, Roberta "Bobbie" MERTZ born in about 1938/39. Virginia
married a soldier. She and her husband Bob spent a lot of years in
Europe and now live in Inglenook, FL. Roberta married a sailor, Johnny
MULLEN. Johnny and Bobbie had two boys Eric & Matthew, and live in
Norfolk, VA following Johnny's retirement from the Navy. Kay died in
1973 after complications from diabetes. After Kay's death, Bob moved to
Norfolk to live with Johnny & Bobbie. Bob MERTZ died in Norfolk in
about 1982.
Julia Eileen "Jewel" CASEY married an Elmer HAYWEISER in about 1936 at
St Agnes Church on 5th Ave in Pittsburgh. The CASEY family had
originally owned the corner of 5th and Robinson where the church and
school now stand. The CASEY family donated the land to the parish.
Elmer was a construction worker. He and his brother William both had a
propensity to drink. Jewel and Elmer lived their whole lives in Soho.
They had three daughters: Theresa HAYWEISER, born in about 1937; Agnes
HAYWEISER, born in about 1939; and, Roseanne HAYWEISER, born about
1941. Elmer died about 1978. Jewel now lives in the North Hills area
of Pittsburgh.
Elizabeth "Betty" CASEY married Francis KELLY in about 1937 at St. Agnes
church. Like his brother-in-law, Francis was a construction worker with
a drinking problem. Betty and Francis lived in a housing project in
Soho and had four children: Anne KELLY; Patrick KELLY; John Charles
"Jackie" KELLY; and, Dennis KELLY. Patrick worked for Mr. Land of
Polaroid until during open-heart surgery, an air bubble entered his
brain leaving him paralyzed. Jackie works for the Pittsburgh Board of
Education. Dennis has followed in his father's and uncle's footsteps.
Dolores Marian CASEY married Ernest Adam "Ernie" KAUL and is still
living.
Ernie KAUL was born March 21,1915, in Connellsville, Fayette Co., PA the
son of Adam KAUL of Heidlesheim, Germany and Martha SCHOLZE. He and
Dolores CASEY were married February 25, 1937 at the German Evangelische
Church in Pittsburgh. Ernie and Dolores KAUL had four children (two
girls and two boys) all of whom are still alive today. Ernie KAUL died
February 2, 1973.
