I'm on an email list for Arkansas history and this question about a college
at Parthenon, Newton County was asked and answered recently. I assume these
are folks descended from the original Casey's (was it Levi?) that moved
there.
I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but in the Newton
County Homestead, Volume 1, Number 2, 1959 page 8 (housed here at the U of
A Special Collections) there is a mention of Parthenon Baptist College.
The article reads as follows:
"One branch of the Baptist church built a college at Parthenon in 1920-21.
It was known as the "Baptist College." High school and College courses
were taught. For a time the colege was recognized as the leading
institution in this party of the country. The main building was a large
stone structure with an upstairs. There were also a frame dormitory and a
large stone gymnasium. THe college thrived for about 12 years, and when
the local people demanded the control and mangement, the church withdrew
its support and the college was no more. Today the buildings are in a
run-down condition. Only the sixth grade is taught in two rooms. There is
a possibility of the school being closed this year and consolidated with
the Jasper school.
Frank Davis and James Shaddox were the stone masons. Levi Casey, Henry
Phillips, W.J. Brasel, and Willie Casey were the committe that sponsored
the construction.
A plaque on the northeast corner of the main building and inside the
corner wall gives the record and history of the college. --W.F.L [Editor
of the Periodical]"
