What I described was a general case.
The GEDCOM file is good as a backup, as well.
But the geneal case would let you install ANY other
genealogy program on the new computer, i.e.
Legacy, Brother's Keeper, etc.

Why would you need to do a gedcom? Just install family tree maker
software
on your new computer. Then COPY your family tree maker file to teh new
computer. Open FTM on the new computer and open tyour copied file. This is
the same process as any other computer file.
You did not say what versions of FTM you had. newer versions should open
any older FTM files. However new FTM files generally will not open on
older versions of FTM will not .
