Hi,
Yes, I'll keep you all posted. I'll post any new information I come across
to the list.
I'm actually looking for a James Casey/Kasey, who, according to a great
grandson, landed in Virginia in the Hampton area, some time before the Rev.
War. He was a mariner and came from Ireland. Thus, my interest in the John
Casey of that time and area who was the master of the ship Montague. My
James was supposedly in the Rev. War in the militia, but no record of that
can be found.
I also found a James LaCaze who owned the ship Impromptu, which is mentioned
in the Virginia Colonial Records. Some have thought my James had a French
connection as well as Irish. My spelling of the name Casey is Kasey, and is
pronounced KaZey.
Another intriguing bit of information I found was an Alexander Kennedy who
was master of the ship Esther. My James was married to Mary Kennedy/Canada
sometime around or before 1770.
I believe some of these ships sailed between VA and the NC coastal areas to
the islands hauling cargo back and forth. At least, I've seen that
somewhere, perhaps in North Carolina records.
My Kaseys were in Bedford County VA in the 1770s. James and Mary bought
quite a bit of property in 1775, as did a William Kennedy/Canada. They did
have some money. Some of the family, including my line, left for KY in the
1830s and settled in the Breckinridge/Hardin Co. areas. Nobody has been able
to figure out where they were before then. 'Tis a deep, dark mystery.......
Logic tells me all of these seafaring folks must connect somewhere, but the
where is a hugh puzzle yet to be figured out! I really don't think they're
part of the Abner Casey bunch, but I could be very wrong.
Some of the names I know are Leon Thomas, Alexander Singleton, James
Singleton, Singleton Lisle/Lyle, (the Singleton name is well used in my
family, still haven't figured that out, either).
James and Mary's kids were Alexander, Ann, William, Mary, James, John,
Thomas, Elizabeth and George. According to the gr. grandson, there were two
other children b. before Alexander, but he didn't have their names, nor does
anyone else.
I also found in immigration records a James Casey who went by the alias of
Alexander Fisher and was transported to Virginia from the London prisons in
the 1740s. It didn't say what he'd done.
Hope I haven't bored you all too much. Any help greatly appreciated.
Sally
