I would tweak it a little.
The Dutch "Van" and German "Von" are not synonymous. The German
"Von"
may well be remembered as "son of", but the Dutch "Van" might
usefully
be remembered as "from."
My ancestor Wolfert Van Kouwenhoven came from Kouwenhoven in Utrecht. He
did not use Van Kouwenhoven as a surname until after he arrived here in
1625. Until then he was Wolfert Gerritse or Gerritsz - the ending
denoting "son of" Gerrit. Wolfert's oldest son was Gerrit Wolfertsz or
Wolfertse. The children born in this land dropped the "Van."
