So happy to see this list active again, and hoping one of you can help
me with a couple of sticking points on my Casey line.
First, my great great grandfather, John T Casey.
John T Casey
b. (1)8 October 1850 in "Richmond, WVa"
m. 22 December 1873 in Anamosa, Jones Co. IA to Margaret Anna Wilkinson
d. 18 July 1931 in Cherokee Co., IA
bur. Oak Hill Cemetery (?) Cherokee Co., IA
WV wasn't created until the Civil War, so it didn't exist in 1850, and
I've been unable to locate his birth records in VA or surrounding
similarly named counties. I've also been unable to locate his burial
place, despite numerous record searches and visits to the Cherokee
cemetery.
Also have a family story that John T worked on the transcontinental
railroad, and was present for the driving of the golden spike in Utah.
John T & Margaret's children:
Myrtle Mable, b. 1874
John William, b. 1878/9
Melvin Franklin, b. 1884 (my great grandfather)
Fred Harrison, b. 1888
Dela Bird, b. 1890
Moving back a generation, John T's parents:
John (Thomas) Casey
b. c1817-20 in Yellowford, Ireland
m. 11 February 1842 in (W)Virginia (?) to Matilda Stone
d. 1 April 1860 in Pierce Twp, Jones Co., IA
occupation: butcher
Matilda Stone
b. 28 February 1822 in (W)Va
d. 28 December 1908 in Leighton, Cherokee Co., IA
(Parents born in Germany?)
Children:
Mary Ann, b. 1845
Elonor/Ellen, b. 1847
John T, b. 1850
William F., b. 1853
Elizabeth, b. 1855
Matilda Ann, b. 1857
I have an 1850 census record placing John & Matilda in Highland Co.,
Virginia, Along with Mary Ann, Elbee (Elonor?), and John T.
I have an 1860 census with Matilda as Head of Household in Wyoming
Twp., Jones Co., IA, with all of the children aside from Mary Ann.
Other than a lead that this John came to Iowa in 1853, I have no other
information on him or his wife Matilda's ancestry aside from family
lore that we're likely originally from near County Cork (which would
make sense, given the location of Yellowford, IRE.)
I've also been unable to locate HIS burial place, though I haven't had
a chance to check the Jones Co., IA cemeteries for him yet.
Does anyone have any relation in this line, or have any directions to
point me in?
Thanks!
