I will keep your data in storage. My earliest Casey/Cazy is Sinclair Casey
b. 1799 Mason Co. which was Kanawha Co. until 1804 when Mason Co. was formed
from Kanawha.

Hi Roger,
I am interested in your line of Casey's in West Virginia. I have a Great
Aunt, Maria or Moria Casey, who married a William Coughlin in Parkersburg,
WV in 1875. I am of the belief that there were relatives in WV that led my
Great Aunt to Parkersburg. I am not sure about the family name Coughlin, but
that could also be the connection to WV. Subsequently, Maria and William
moved to Chicago and William owned and ran a saloon. They were there for the
1880 Census and my Ggrandmother, Susan Casey, lived with them. If any of
this makes some sense, please give me a shout. If not, keep me in mind if
you run across a segment of Caseys who might be related.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Tom Schenk

This is the weirdest e-mail I have ever received. First of all, I
have
been
doing genealogy for 39 years now, and have many lines back to the
100's.
I
am on the Casey list, but rarely post. Now here is what is weird
about
the
e-mail.
1. My daughter's name is Joyce.
2. My name is Roger Casey
3. My father Clyde C. Casey married my mother Mabel Shannon.
4. My daughter Joyce named her little girl Shannon.
We are having our Casey reunion the 2nd Saturday in August here in
West Virginia. Of course all are welcome. Just bring a couple of
covered
dishes
to share. We eat like crazy.
I am also interested in the 25 marker DNA project, but need a little
direction. I have my Shannon line back to Scotland and Ireland 1571.
Of all lines I am stumped on is my grandfather Sinclair Casey, born
1799 in Mason Co., VA now WV. Nothing past him.

Subject: [CASEY-L] Casey DNA Project
Hello, fellow Casey-Listers...Being a female, I cannot personally
participate in the DNA project but have sponsored a cousin of my
mother's, who sent in his kit. The 25-marker results from
familytreedna.com show our line is unrelated to either of the other
two kits they've received (according to a person I called at FTDNA).
My earliest Casey ancestor is Daniel Casey, RWS (recently proven to
DAR), who migrated to Wilkes and Elbert Co. Georgia from Henry Co.
Virginia. I suspect that his father or close relative may have been
one Roger Casey
who
was in Amherst Co. Virginia, who had 12 white people in his household
on a 1783 tax list. This same Roger, I believe (because of surname
proximities and other reasons) ended up in Wilkes/Lincoln Co. Georgia
on Fishing Creek later in the 1780s. This is on the Savannah River
just across the line
from
SC. I have no proof, but there is strong circumstantial evidence of
family
connection to my Daniel and also to a Joel Casey, Thomas Casey, and
William
Casey. This Joel is likely the one who migrated to Hardin Co., TN
where there was also a Joseph Casey in records of the early 1820s (a
brother of Joel?). This whole batch of Caseys has close ties also to
the Shannon surname.
Roger Casey also had other children mentioned in deeds: Sarah, Hannah,
Ellinor, Peggy and John. There is no will to be found for either Roger
or Daniel. I don't know what happened to Roger's son John since there
are
many
John Caseys and I cannot say conclusively in Georgia/SC enough which
is which-only my own, Daniel's son John who married Elizabeth Pace.
The earlier Roger from Virginia, with 12 people in his household, must
have
been the progenitor of many currently "unknown" Caseys. It
would be
wonderful to get some more DNA submitted and find out if there are any
possible relatives out there. So far there have been no results
posted on the Casey DNA website but you can view other surname sites
with posted results and see how we can likewise make progress in
sorting our Casey lines. It would be exciting for us to make some of
the same breakthroughs. Examples, PACE or CROW projects have had
enough participants, around 50-75 each, to show several different
lines emerging.
Here's the link to the Pace site where you can see their color-coded
chart of DNA results:
http://www.pacesociety.org/DNA/results.htm
The Crow site, also with a color coded chart, is:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~crow2000/dnachart.htm (Note,
there was a Crow who married a female Casey.)
The $99 cost of a basic "12-marker" result, when you consider the time
and money it might save in chasing down a wrong lead, is very much
worth it.
You
can upgrade to a 25-marker kit later if you want. I'm going to a
family reunion soon and want to encourage male Caseys there to be part
of this project since it also helps to have a checkpoint within your
own known
line
(in case of unknown adoptions, etc.).
Any published results are anonymous, as far as who sent the kit-only
kit numbers are used as identifiers, along with your stated ancestral
line.
When
results are published (in the form of the kit numbers and DNA marker
results
and known ancestor lines), there can be comparison of what we think
we
know
with trends shown by the markers. Even "unknown" lines can
possibly
be matched with DNA markers of known lines. Discrepancies can be
observed and noted. For instance, those who think they are of the
"Abner" line can compare and verify results against others who think
they are of the Abner line. Again, the actual submitter's name is
anonymous and the test is
simple
and painless-swabbing the inside of the mouth. I'm not a
technical
person but urge everyone to visit the
familytreedna.com website, type
in "Casey"
in
the search box and follow the link to the Casey project site. I hope
our administrator will be posting results soon and that other male
Caseys will participate wholeheartedly. Only by doing so, can the
Casey project, now
in
its infancy, establish a database of results to go forward and make
everyone's efforts worthwhile. It takes about six weeks to get
results after sending them in, so, get started soon!! Thanks..
