In 1830, in Randolph County, Illinois, a Jonathan Case is enumerated with a wife, one son
under 5, three daughters, one under 5, two daughters 5-10. Jonathan is 30 - 40 and his
wife is 20 - 30. Speculation is that he is the head of a family with various
members enumerated in 1850 and 1860 censuses. Although this lines up with son Jackson
(1830), daughters Independence (1828), Charlotte, and Olive(1823) and wife Catharine born
in Indiana in 1794, the possibility exists that James Case (1826) was the under 5 son and
Jackson was not yet born. A Jonathan Case who aligns with this age was not enumerated in
the 1840 census in Randolph, St. Clair nor Monroe counties in Illinois. Catharine Case
married W. Calaway McGreggor in 1834 in Monroe County, Illinois. (All you golfers feel
free to chuckle)
I believe that Charlotte Case Brown, enumerated in the 1850 Clark County, MO census with
daughter Catharine Brown, mother Catharine McGregory (McGregor) and brother Jackson Case
is the Charlotte Morgan in Schuyler County, MO in 1860. I find the family of Daniel and
Charlotte Morgan living in Schuyler county, MO in 1860. Daniel and Charlotte are
enumerated with daughters Mary (I believe Mary to be a child of his first marriage) 15,
Catharine, 14 (I believe Catharine to be Charlotte's daughter from her marriage to
Brown), Noah age 3 and Jackson, age 1 year. I am wondering if this is the Charlotte Case
who married Spencer Ellsworth in 1838 and was divorced or annulled soon after 1840.
Spencer Ellsworth remarried after 1840.
Based on census information in Clark County, MO in 1850, the brother of Charlotte Case is
Jackson Case. Jackson was born in 1830 in Randolph County, Illinois. His family is also
enumerated in the 1860 Schuyler county census, two pages after the Morgan family, though
without Jackson, who may have already removed to Arkansas. Listed are Sarah, b 1826 MA,
Perry Case, Iowa, 1852, Ellen Case, MO 1849 and Catherine Case b Indiana, aged 58. I
believe Catherine's age is off by about 8 years.
His sister Independence Case LeMarr and her husband John LeMarr may have purchased land,
via a grant, very close to Daniel Morgan's property. A John Q. Lemarr is listed for
Schuyler County Missouri in the BLM's index. John and Independence's daughter,
Emily Jane LeMarr Crawford, was born in Schuyler County in 1848. Jackson Case and the
LeMarrs removed to Newton County, Arkansas. The LeMarrs are enumerated in Newton County in
the 1860 census.
Olive Case Evans married Washington Evans in 9 May 1851 in Clark County, Missouri, with
Snyder N.(?) Saylor, J. P. officiating. However, they were already a family in 1850,
enumerated in census in Clark County, Missouri, next door to John and Independence Lemarr.
Independence, Charlotte and Olive have daughters who were born in 1846 in Iowa.
Also enumerated in Clark County MO in 1850 is James Case born in Kentucky in 1825,
living next door to Olive and Wash Evans, with wife Melcena, nee Sawyer, and infant
daughter Mary. James and Melsena [sic] were married by Arphaxad Musgrove, a JP, in Clark
County, Missouri in Feb 1847.
Any Case chasers (Randolph County, IL /Iowa/Missouri/Newton County Arkansas) have any
thoughts or additional information on this family?
