Am I to understand that it is all right to read the message, but to be careful
with the attachments?
My browser, Netscape is set to display pictures when received, without any
action required by me.
Can viruses be attached to graphic files such as .JPG .BMP and .TIF ?
I understand the latest was a simple script in visual basic. Would this only be
effective IF
you were using internet Explorer and Outlook Express?
Thanks....

With the recent virus attacks, it is hard to know when you are safe.
The
most recent viruses are hard for a person to detect since they come from
someone you know. As a rule of thumb, if you recieve an email with an
attachment, and that attachment has two suffixes, do not open it. An
example of 2 suffixes would be:
Documentname.txt.vbs
If you feel that an email might be something important for you, but you are
wary about opening it, email the sender in a new email and verify that they
did, in fact, send you an email and what the attachment is.
In these most recent attacks, the sender is not aware of the emails sent
from their machine, so the sender should be able to tell you, yes or no, if
they did email you.
Anti-virus programs are a extremely important if you have outside access.
But, anti-virus programs sometimes can not pick up these types of viruses
or, when a virus is new, it has not been identified and cured. So, always
be vigilant with your email. Best of luck to all of you.
As an added note, if you receive junk email and dislike it, you can reply to
the sender to remove you from their mailing list. Many junk emails provide
you instruction at the bottom of the email on how to remove yourself from
that mailing list. It may take a while, but you can slowly remove yourself
from these lists.
