Is anyone researching these names? All are mentioned in the History of
Middlebury, Vermon by J. Swift. I visited the Case Street Cemetery in
Middlebury, Vermont this morning and found the gravestone of Abel Case,
bother of Nathan Case, who died in 1831 at age 66. The history states that
he was returning home from town when he was thrown from his wagon and died.
There are two headstones next to his, one for Mrs. Sally Case, wife of Abel
Case d. 1814 51 years of age; the other is Serah Case wife of Abel Case d.
Aug 14, 1860 85 years old.
Nathan Case, son-in-law of Nathaniel Munger, was from Norfolk, Connecticut.
In 1792+/- he settled in Middlebury on Lot #12 (near present day Munger
Street). He later also owned Lot #51. The History states that he was the
father of Abel P. Case. (I don't know if this is the same Abel as my
headstone, but doubt it. The History states in a different section that the
Abel Case of my headstone was the brother of Nathan Case and the son-in-law
of George Smith.)
Not found in this cemetery, but mentioned in the History, is Loyal Case,
Esq. He was a promising lawyer in Middlebury who died Oct. 13, 1808 at age
32.
Louden Case from the Town of Addison, Addison Co, Vermont owned property in
Middlebury. He bought a tavern located near the center of town in 1803 from
Foote. Two years later he sold the tavern and land to the group wanting to
build the Congregatonal Church. This church still presides over downtown
Middlebury.
Also mentioned in the History is a Jonah Case, who I believe was the father
of Loyal. His daughter, Lucy, married Mr. Horation Seymour a prominent
Middlebury lawyer (and her brother, Loyal's partner). She died October of
1838.
If this interests anyone, I'd be glad to research these people more.
