Dear Members of the Case Surname Discussion Group,
Who was "L. Case"?
L. Case was a creditor of William Cooper and George N. Remington, as
mentioned in an 1842 record ("Bill of Sale") of Suffield, Hartford
County, Connecticut. According to the Bill of Sale, dated November 12,
1842, William Cooper transferred/sold his (Cooper's) share of the wood
on the "Tar Kiln Lot (which was jointly owned by Remington and Cooper)
to his partner George N. Remington. The conveyance of the wood was
apparently to satisfy William Cooper's share of a debt owed to L. Case
by Remington and Cooper. The "notes in hand" that were owed to L. Case
totalled $101.18. But what was the given name of L. Case and who was he?
I have narrowed my search (for now) to Levi Phelps Case, who seems to be
a strong candidate for a match. Levi Phelps Case was born January 4,
1800, a son of Levi Case (1760-1802) and Polly Humphrey (1764-1849).
Levi Phelps Case married Harriet Jones, November 27, 1823. he died
January 30, 1850 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, Connecticut.
Harriet Jones was born January 12, 1805 and died October 31, 1870. She
was a daughter of Elijah Jones. Harriet (Jones) Case was enumerated in
the 1850 Census (August 24, 1850), in Hartland, Hartford County,
Connecticut, page 177, dwelling 78/family 83. Harriet Case was listed as
44 years old, with everyone in her household born in Connecticut.
Cornelius was 14; Harriet M. was 9; Julia was 7; Campbell was 5; Hellen
was 4 and Lucien(?) was 2.
Campbell Phelps Case was born October 5, 1846 at East Hartland,
Connecticut and married Lamira Banning.
Can anyone help me identify "L. Case"? If I succeed in identifying L.
Case, I can then uncover details regarding all three of the men named in
the Suffield Bill of Sale, such as the location of the Tar Kiln Lot; the
residences of Case, Cooper and Remington; the occupations and families
of all three men and the circumstances surrounding the debt and the
business activities of the men before and after incurring the debt.
Thank you for your interest and any input you may have. I look forward
to meeting other researchers via the List. I have been researching my
family history for ten years, with Hartford County, Connecticut one of
the main geographical areas under scrutiny, especially Suffield and the
towns bordering it. Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Randal "Randy" W. Cooper
