There appears to be a Dutch name KASS or KASSE which has been transcribed as CASS and as
CASSE. Apparently some of these families emigrated to Canada and Philadelphia.
I have no documented proof of this, but it might be worth following up to find the
verasity of this story.
The spelling of names was inconsistent until the 20th century. There are many examples in
my own family names (some 40 surnames) and those who were illiterate had their names
transcribed by someone else. If the owner of the name had an accent, then we might expect
changes in name spelling such as when a census enumerator filled in the census form of
aperson who originated from another prt of the country. Mrs Caroline CASE's place of
birth was written differently on each of three different census returns (1881, 1891 and
1901) that I have seen. This varied from Pully Well (no county entered to Prittlewell,
Essex, England, which I have discovered is near Southend on Sea, Essex. Problem is there
is no record of her to be found in Prittlewell parish records. Her maiden name also
varied from ALLERTON to ALLINGTON. On her childen's birth certificates her wrote X
the mark of Caroline Case so indicating that she was probably unable to write her own
name. Another possibility i!
s that she was asked to make
her mark, which she too literally.
The point is we need to be flexible in our thinking and prepared to think laterally
don't you thinK?
