Pardon, Peter + John Case all sons of Peter Case (b. abt 1820, 1826 + 1829,
all in NY)
All three of these brothers were living in Pine Creek Twp., Crawford Co., PA
in the 1850 census. Pardon + Peter were living together with their wives +
children. John + his family were a few pages away.
Fast forward to 1860 census. Pardon + Peter Case are in Cheshire Twp.,
Allegan Co., MI. They are not living together, but are just a page away.
Pardon dies soon after this census is taken. Peter's wife Hannah is no were
to be found. I do not know if she died in PA or Mich.? Their son Albert is
no were to be found either. But Albert does again appear in the protest of
his fathers will in 1874. John is still in Pine creek Twp., Crawford co.,
PA. for 1860.
John Case, the other brother doesn't show up in Mich. until the 1870 census.
He is an innkeeper in Oakland Co., Pontiac, MI. His wife Harriet and their
children Benj., Isaac + Barbara are all born in PA. He isn't far from the
farm of his father Peter Case + brother Peter Case. He has another brother
who may be the twin of Peter named Henry who has his own hotel. John, Peter,
Henry + father Peter are all within miles of each other.
Brothers Henry, Peter and father Peter are all dead by 1877. Peter Case, b.
in 1799 has on his death record that he is the son of Pardon Case + Elizabeth
of NY. (Peter Case, b. 1799 had other children + I think 2 wives. Lucretia
Loucks and Louisa White or Louisa Lovelace)
His daughter Maria who was b. abt 1822 m. a John Palmer and they lived in the
next county. All through the land transactions we see all of these names
going back and forth.
Peter, his wife and 6 children were all living in Marion Twp., Wayne Co., NY
for the 1830 census.
MY QUESTIONS after all of this background.
Can anyone confirm my info on Peter Case b. 1799 2 wives?
If he was m. to a Lucretia Loucks, does anyone know if she died or they
divorced?
I think Peter case, b. 1799 and his second wife had immigrated to Mich. by
1836/7. I believe that Peter Case, b. 1799 and his second wife had a child
born on Lake Erie. (source; 1880 Mich. Census, son William)
So this means he left daughter Maria behind in NY. With whom did he leave
her?
What took the 3 sons to Pennsylvania by 1850?
What is the maiden name of Peter Case, b. 1826 wife who is Hannah + b. in NY
in 1833?
Why did Pardon + Peter Case (brothers) move to Allegan Co. instead of coming
to Oakland Co., Mich. where their father was? (Note; Peter the son did make
his home near father Peter after that.)
Basically, anything would help.

Dear Researchers of the Case Surname, Posted on the Rootsweb Case Family
Mailing List,
"L. Case" was named in the following document, which is here copied in
full, with punctuation and spelling intact. If anyone can provide clues
as to the given name and identity of L. Case, I would be most
appreciative and such information could lead to important links with the
Cooper and Remington families. The document in question is a Bill of
Sale recorded at Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut. The instrument
is dated November 12, 1842 and can be found in "Suffield, Connecticut
Land Records", 18:368-9, microfilm L.H. 212-3, item 2 (volume 18,
1832-1846), Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah (Connecticut
State Library microfilm #1665).
As pointed out by Doctor Robert L. Rafford of Middlebury, Connecticut,
this land record is important because it suggests that William Cooper
was preparing to leave the Suffield area. The document shows that
William Cooper and George N. Remington jointly owned a tract of land in
Suffield Town(ship) that was known as the "Tar Kiln Lot". I have located
this tract of land. It may have been twenty acres and was located on the
west bank of the Connecticut River, at East Street and Halliday Avenue,
not far south of the Massachusetts-Connecticut border. The tar kiln was
operated by Obadiah Miller in the early 1700s. I have not yet traced the
ownership of the Tar Kiln Lot from Obadiah Miller to William
Cooper/George N. Remington.
We further learn that Cooper and Remington owed $101.18 to L. Case and
that Mr. Cooper apparently sold his share of the wood on the Tar Kiln
Lot in order to satisfy his share of the debt owed to L. Case. This
seems to portray a man who was settling debts and raising money in
preparation for relocating, especially when one considers that his name
was removed from the membership roll of Suffield Second Baptist Church
in 1844. However, one puzzling detail is that his name was placed ON the
membership roll in 1843. Here is the Bill of Sale:
William Cooper to George N. Remington- A Bill of Sale
Know all men by these presents that I William Cooper of Suffield in the
county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, for the consideration of
one hundred dollars received to my full satisfaction of George N.
Remington of Suffield in said county have bargained and sold and do by
these presents bargain and sell unto the said George N. all the wood
that remains on a lot called the Tar kiln lot that belongs to Remington
and Cooper. And I do for myself and executors Adminstrators agree to
warrant and defend to the said Remington his Executors Adminstrators and
assigns for the consideration aforesaid. I have given the said Remington
actual possession of all the wood remaining on said lot.
Whereas this conveyance ia a security on one half of the notes of hand
signed by Remington and Cooper and made payable to L. Case of same(?
This word is difficult to read) date with this instrument amounting in
all to one Hundred one dollars eighteen cents with Interest thereon if
said Cooper pay to said Case one half of the above sum with interest the
above writing is to be null and void.
Rec'd 12 Nov 1842 William Cooper
And Recorded by
O.S./L. Sheldon Register
Sincerely,
Randal W. Cooper
P.S. I would like to again thank those researchers who have already
helped in the search for the identity of L. Case.
Second P.S. I acknowledge and thank Doctor Robert L. Rafford of
Middlebury, Connecticut for his meticulous research of this issue. His
insights and suggestions continue to influence and energize the search
for the parents and birthplace of William Cooper.
Dear Members of the Case Surname Discussion Group, especially Carol
(Noble) Benner,
The wife of Ashbel Case was Azuba Foote. Ashbel Case was a son of Deacon
Reuben Case. The parents and ancestry of Azuba Foote are named in
~Thomas Cooper of Springfield and Some Allied Families~ by Agnes Thomson
Cooper and John Bradley Cooper, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1987.
>From the "Thomas Cooper Book" I have obtained the following information.
Azuba Foote (born April 13, 1760) was the second of ten children of
Joseph Foote and Azuba Griswold. Joseph Foote was born September 17,
1727 and died at Simsbury, Connecticut on September 16, 1779. Joseph
Foote married Azubah Griswold on December 8, 1757 at Windsor,
Connecticut. Azubah Griswold was born in 1735 and died August 12, 1829.
She was a daughter of Nehemiah Griswold.
The ten children of Joseph Foote and Azubah Griswold were: 1. Joseph
(1758-1789) 2. Azuba (1760-1822) 3. Sarah (1762-1842) 4. Elisha (born
1764) 5. Delight (1767-1847) 6. Aaron (1769-1842) 7. Daughter (born May
6, 1771) died in infancy 8. Levi (1773-1775) 9. Amelia (1777-1792) 10.
Electa (1780-1848).
Joseph Foote was descended from Daniel, Samuel, Nathaniel and Nathaniel.
The Foote data was taken from the book ~Descendants of Nathaniel
Foote~.
There is more information, such as exact dates. In addition, I have more
data pertaining to English Immigrant Nathaniel Foote (1593-1644) and his
descendants (Nathaniel, Jr., Samuel and Daniel). If anyone would like
such information, I would be more than happy to convey the data offlist,
since the study of the Foote line departs from the Case surname.
Nathaniel Foote and his descendants were included in the "Thomas Cooper
Book" because of Chester Thomas Foote's marriage to Helen Maria Cooper,
who was an eighth-great grandchild of Immigrant Thomas Cooper
(1617-1675).
Best wishes to all members of the Case Surname Discussion Group.
Sincerely,
Randal W. Cooper
Dave Case,
I have been looking at Timothy's sister, Lydia. I think that
she is the Lydia Case who married Obadiah Bush and lived
out her life in Sheffield, MA. That is why the questions about
the book. Just because I love this hobby so much, I also
collect the first 5 generations from the immigrant. So far, I
cannot be 100% sure that Timothy's sister is the lady for
whom I am searching.

Dear Subscribers to the Case Surname Mailing List,
Ashbel Case and his father Reuben Case are mentioned on page 93 in
~Thomas Cooper of Springfield and Some Allied Families~ by Agnes Thomson
Cooper and John Bradley Cooper, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1987.
These two are the only instances of the Case surname in the book.
I am posting the information on the Case Mailing List, recognizing the
possibility that a subscriber might find value in it. Here is the
passage, exactly as it appears in the book, except for what I have added
in parentheses for clarity:
"AZUBA (FOOTE) b 13 Apr 1760 m 1775 ASHBEL CASE of Simsbury, CT b ca
1752 s/o Deacon Reuben Case d Hammond (Saint Lawrence County), NY 23 Apr

The "Thomas Cooper" book has more information regarding the ancestry of
Azuba Foote, who married Ashbel Case in 1775. If anyone would like more
information from said book, please let me know and I will do my best to
help.

I noticed the except from the Duncan book that Carol

If anyone else is looking, I descended from the

They lived in Jefferson County, NY near Philadelphia during the 1880 US
census.
I'd guess they lived there with children until they died. At least my
wife's mother was born there.
They are my wife's ggparents and we know precious little about them.
Anyone have some data for us?

In rereading what I had sent Randal, I find I had made an error in the

Kathy,
Do you have a copy of this book?
In the family of Richard Case and Amy Reed, what do you have as
a birth date for Lydia Case? Does the book say that she died in 1740
or that she died after 1740?
Timothy, s/o Richard Case & Amy Reed, lived out his life in Great
Barrington, MA. Do you have anything on his family?
Amy Case, d/o Richard Case & Amy Reed, lived out her life in
Sheffield, MA. Do you have anything on her? Whom did she marry?
I think the Lydia, of this family is the one who married Obadiah Bush
of Sheffield, MA. So far, I cannot find a marriage for them. There is
no marriage in Sheffield, MA, or Simsbury, CT. I haven't checked
Great Barrington, MA, yet.

Dear Kathy Case Bohl, Member of the Case Surname Discussion Group,
Thank you very much for your kind assistance, in the matter of the
kinship between one Job Case (early settler of Granville, Ohio) and Levi
Phelps Case. I do appreciate your help, even more so since you are the
only person who responded to my query. Thank you again!
My "initiation" into the study of the Case surname was brought about by
a Bill of Sale in the records of Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut.
The document was dated November 12, 1842 and named an "L. Case" as a
creditor of William Cooper and George N. (Nichols) Remington. Naturally,
I was immediately drawn into a search for the given name of Mr. L. Case.
The results of my ongoing investigation seem to point to the given name
"Levi" as being the correct one.
If (still "if" at this point, not "since") that tentative conclusion is
correct, the next step is to determine which Levi Case was the creditor
of Remington and Cooper. I am still working on this thorny problem, so
if you have any information that would identify the L. Case of the 1842
Suffield document, I would be more than happy to hear from you. Once
again, thank you for your kindness. I wish you much success in your
research!
Sincerely,
Randal W. Cooper

Ms. Bohl wrote that Job Case, husband of Mary Holcomb, was a first
cousin of Levi Case, husband of Polly Humphrey, making Levi Phelps Case
(Levi Case's son) a first cousin to Job Case, once removed.
Randal,
I have a Luther Case living in Gallia County, OH about 1820-1829 (he died
and is buried in Gallipolis,OH). I believe his parents to be Benajah Case
and Lydia Woodruff. He was born about 1788 probably in Chittenden, VT;
though his grave says Conneticut on it; I believe his family had moved to
VT very near the time of his birth.
Benajah and Lydia had at least two other sons, a Levi (born in CT about
1775) and a Benajah (born in CT and died in 1841, OH - I don't know the
county).
Benajah (son of Joseph Case, Jr and Hannah Humphrey) was born in Simsbury,
Hartford, CT. I believe Lydia Woodruff was the daughter of Josiah Woodruff
and Lydia Woodruff.
I don't know how or if this connects.

identify the 1806 and 1807 Ohio Levi Cases, I would be most appreciative
and it could lead to important links with Hartford County, Connecticut
Cases. Thank you very much for any suggestions or information you may
have at your disposal. Thanks again; I do appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Randal W. Cooper
