Yes, it is still around, but the Melissa U & V are new ones.
Speaking of ol' Happy, I just received a BANNED post notice from one of
you guys' server that Carole's post was banned because it had the full
name of ol' Happy in the text! Talk about good virus protection! :)
Cheers!

Hi Ya'll,
OK, another round of the Melissa virus on the move. This time it is the
Melissa U and Melissa V, and these get in through Outlook Express E-mail
and MS Word documents, the same way as Melissa did.
Both variants are engineered so as to appear to have been sent from a
friend. In the case of Melissa.U, the subject line reads "pictures," and
in the case of Melissa.V it reads "My Pictures."
In both cases, the sender's registered Microsoft Word 97 or Word 2000
user name, if available, will follow in the subject line. The body of
the e-mail message will
read "what's up?" in the case of Melissa.U, and will be blank in the
case of Melissa.V.

Now would be a good time to update your Virus protection databases.

Thanks for any help on any of these questions! God Bless! Bob

Here's what I would attempt to do:
Send a written letter to Mrs. Duncan again requesting permission to place
the book on the internet. Doing this would eliminate the problem of a
reprint of the book, and explain to her that making the data available
online for all to see would foster further research and that we would be
able to annotate the book with corrections and updates. This would also
remove or at least give her a solution to the 'errors in the data' problem.
You said that she stated that she didn't have permission to place the
data on the internet. Offer to do the work to investigate whether this is
indeed a problem.
I would give up on the project only after all other avenues were
attempted. Good luck!

I'm searching for the parents of Joseph Case. Although I've seen that name pop up numerous times, this particular Joseph Case is very elusive.
Joseph married Mary Ann Beacraft in Andrew County, Missouri (near St. Joseph). They had a son, James Henry Case born in 1856. Apparently Joseph died when James was 2 and Mary Ann remarried. She subsequently remarried and also died a few years later. James was then brought up by his stepfather and new wife. James had 13 children.
I am still searching for the parents of James' father, Joseph Case. General concensus in the family has it that Joseph originally was from Pennsylvania, but I have no more information than that. Can anyone help??
Hi everyone,
As most of you know, I was in the process of scanning and editing the
book Ruth Cost Duncan had written concerning John Case/Sarah Spencer
lines for adding to the Case Clearing House Homepage. (22 pages done so
far)
Last week I sent Ruth a letter telling her that Lloyd Morley had told me
that he spoke with her in person (he got a copy of her book at that
time) and had received her permission for him to copy the book and send
it to me for placing on the website, and I told her that I would like to
get written permission from her before I did so.
Sadly, Ruth Duncan says she has no recollection of Lloyd Morley, and
that although she had permission to use the data from Dr. Case's
manuscripts for her book, she didn't have permission to have the book
placed on the Internet. So she must say no to my request.
She says she hasn't the money nor the time to publish her book. She also
says that people have complained about errors in the data.
So, I am halted in my tracks as far as placing the book, in total,
online.
So, now what do I do?
Should I place a list of names (the index) in her book on the Case site,
and have a list of book owners who are willing to send the data from the
book to a user who requests info on a name?

Well, I've *FINALLY* gotten someone at this antique shop to
provide me w/ a minimum of info...geez, I had to ask them
if they were really interested in selling the photos or whether
they were there simply for "display purposes?" GOOD GRIEF!
I've spoken now w/ 3 different people over the course of a week
asking each of them for:
1) an exact count of photos,
2) a total "price tag" on the collection, and
3) at least a partial, cursory listing of given names for this
Mason City, Cerro Gordo, IA CASE family...
At any rate, after my 5th phone call down there, I finally
can provide some answers:
There are 88 photos in the collection, supposedly bought
at an estate sale years ago. They are in a small "suitcase"
and a couple of the photos may be duplicates. A co-owner
of the shop said that he'd accept $250 for the entire collection
and the "suitcase." As for names, I may have been wrong about
"Fredrick CASE" being included, some of the given names on the
CASE photos included; Francis, Sally, Hattie & Frank, Mary Davidson
CASE, H. CASE, Abby & Howard, Addie CASE, Edmund (?), etc.
Obviously, many more given names are on the backs of these 88
CASE family photos but this is about all I managed to "extract"
over the phone from them...Several photos apparently are group
photos containing CASE family & cousins and the DURR surname
(amongst others) appears often on these...
At any rate, Jan, if you're still wanting them (since you were
the 1st to write me), I'll drive down to Rockerville, SD, buy
them for you, package them securely and ship them to you
for $300. The $50 "mark-up" will cover the $15 in sales tax and
will provide $35 for gasoline, time, packaging & insured postage
expenses. Send me a check for that amount to:
Greg Reeves
3424 Idlewild Court
Rapid City, South Dakota
57702-4856
and I'll acquire and ship them pronto. Then perhaps you, Pat
Case (acase(a)flash.net) and Karen McCarty (KMcca97991(a)aol.com),
(among others), can/should decide if there's additional "splitting" of
the collection to be done amongst you'all, huh? (BTW: did you each
know of one another's interest in CASE genealogy in Cerro Gordo Co.,
IA before now?...'just curious!)
In the meantime, I'm going to unsubscribe to you'alls CASE Family
mailing list since I have no personal interest in CASE genealogy &
am getting far too busy again and my mailbox is filling again w/
work-related E-mails! <grin>

I am trying to locate the burial sites for:
William S. Cass, James M. Cass, Frederic Cass, Mary Cass.
1. William S. Cass born ___ 00 1816, England, Occupation: Master Mason,
Stonecutter, married Rebecca Stuart, born ___ 00 1814, England, died
Oct. 02 1875, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest Lawn. Section BB, Lot 140.
1865 Census gives William's age as 49. He is not buried in Forest
Lawn. Census records for various members of the family gives the
immigration date as 1853. I do not know where or when William S. died.
He was a Master Mason who built the addition to St. Paul's Church in
Buffalo, NY in the 1870's. See notes from The History of St. Paul's
Church, Buffalo NY 1817 to 1888 by Charles W. Evans. "The cutting and
laying of the stone is in charge of Mr. William S. Cass. Mr. Cass has
had great experience in English Cathedrals and Churches, superintending
in 1835 the rehanging of Big Tom, of Lincoln; and he has built Gothic
stone Churches at Haynton and at Easton, in Lincolnshire." The name CASS
is inscribed in the stone spire of the addition. William S. is listed
in the Buffalo City Directory from 1865 through 1876. The directory
also has a listing for a firm William S. Cass & Co. in 1871 and a
listing for Cass & Sons in 1873. William S. is listed for the last time
as Sexton at St. Paul's Church in 1876. Note that sons James M. and
Frederic are listed for the last time in 1877. William and his sons
James and Frederic apparently left Buffalo ca. 1876-77. None are buried
in Buffalo.
Rebecca: Birth date calculate from 1865 Census. She was 51 in June
1865.
Children:
* 2. i James M. Cass born ___ 00 1840, England
* James M. CASS m. Elizabeth HOLDEN 8 May 1866 in Buffalo
* 3. ii Robert T. Cass born Jul. 25 1844, England
* 4. iii William H. Cass born ___ 00 1846, England
William H. CASS m. 18 Sep 1876 Mattie SHAW in Buffalo.
. iv Mary ? Cass born ___ 00 1847, England.
Mary CASS m. 3 Jul 1866 William WALKER in Buffalo.
Mary CASS m. 9 Sep 1873 Samuel S. McCLARY in Buffalo
Added 9/99
- ------------------------------------------------------------------
I received via a kind person on the web the following information which
was from the Buffalo, New York newspapers. None of this verified.
Mary CASS m. 3 Jul 1866 William WALKER
Mary CASS m. 9 Sep 1873 Samuel S. McCLARY.
We can assume that she may have called her second husband "Mac" as noted
in her letter referenced above.
Mary died date and place not known. 1865 Census gives age as 18. Known
to be on a farm in Brookville, Kansas ca. 1877 from a letter written to
"Brother Will" (William H.). Letter mentions "fall wheat" so she was
probably on a farm. She mentions Mac and Fred. (Mac her husband ?, was
Fred her brother? ) The letter closes, " poor Jim dying away from all of
us but thank God he did not realize it was death." This would have been
James M. Cass.
Added 10/99. The "Mac" reference in her letter seems to verify her
second husband. Does her phrase concerning Jim "not realizing it was
death" imply a sudden accidental death?
6. v Frederic Cass born ___ 00 1854, England, occupation Engineer,
place and date of death not known. The 1865 Census gives age as 12.
May have been in Brookville KS with sister in 1877. He is known to be
in Denver, Colorado in 1894. Letter written by Fred to William H. Cass
in regard to the notice of the death of Mattie (Martha E., William's
wife). The letter mentions the names Mary (His sister?) and Emma (His
wife?).
One of my Grandmother's (Maude S. Cass) letters to my mother in 1922
noted that she had gotten a letter from " her" uncle Fred in Tacoma,
Washington. Perhaps Frederic ended his days there.

2. James M. Cass born ___ 00 1840, England, Occupation: Stonecutter,
married on 8 May 1866 in Buffalo Elizabeth B. Holden, born ___ 00 1837,
St. Helens, England (Isle of Man?). Elizabeth died Mar 06 1917,
Buffalo, NY and was buried Forest Lawn Sect 14 Lot 732. Listed in
Buffalo City Directory as Mrs. [1879-1894]. James died in 1877, place
and exact date not known. Birth date calculated from 1865 Census. He
was 25 in June 1865. 1865 Census gives age as 25. Listed in Buffalo
City directory [1865-1877]. William S. son James M. and son Frederic
left Buffalo in [1877?]. All clues are that James M. died that year,
away from Buffalo.
Added 10/99 James M. CASS m. E.HOLDEN 8 May 1866. From same source
as noted for
Mary, above.

7. i John R. Cass born May 31 1868.

successful, had a fine home with servants, at one time a chauffeur and a

but adopted a boy, William A. Cass in the 1920's. Bill was killed in an
airliner crash in 1934.

1923 " by Henry Wayland Hill, Vol 3, pg. 426. Also "History of Niagara

9. iii William J. Cass born ___ 00 1875, Buffalo, NY,
Occupation Patternmaker, died Feb. 16, 1904, Buffalo, NY, buried in
Forest Lawn Sect 14, Lot 732. He was 29 years old when he died, and a
Widower living at 642 Plymouth Ave. I have no clues concerning his
wife. Gertrude's diary noted her father John as one of 4 children. The
Buffalo City Directory shows a William Cass at 18 Hubbard, the same
address as Mrs. Elizabeth Cass (his mother) and John R. Cass (Brother)
for the years 1891-1892, and Mrs. Elizabeth Cass at 642 Plymouth Ave for
the years 1893-1894, with William J. Cass (Patternmaker), Frederic S.
and John R. In 1900 only Mary R. and Frederic S. are listed for 642
Plymouth Ave
10. iv Frederic S. Cass born ___ 00 1876, Buffalo, NY,
Occupation: Business Man, died Dec. 03 1948, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest
Lawn N 1/2, Sect 14 Lot 732. Married Minnie L. Johnson ( Daughter of
John A. Johnson and Christine Carlson ) born Dec.
16, 1886 in Randolph, NY, died Mar 29, 1951 in Buffalo, NY.
3. Robert T. Cass born Jul. 25 1844, England, Occupation: Stonecutter,
died Nov. 16 1886, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest Lawn Section BB, Lot 140.
Birth date calculated from 1865 Census Record. He was 20 in June 1865.
He is listed in the Buffalo City Directory [1865-1885]. He may have
been married to a Sarena (Sara) Cass. See below. He may have married
Laura B. {Estes ?} born 1846, died 5/15/1941, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest
Lawn Section 1, Lot 132. This is the Estes lot. Speculation. No firm
information as to this marriage. Robert and Laura were matched by their
ages, and the knowledge that Laura had a son named Robert L. She is
buried in the Estes Lot in the cemetery, so I assumed she was an Estes.
Laura B. Cass shows in the City of Buffalo directory for 1891-1894.
11. i Hattie Cass born 6/23/1872, died 12/11/1891, Buffalo, NY, Buried
in Forest Lawn section 1, Lot 132. This is the Estes lot. She was
single and living at 160 Riley at the time of her death, where Laura B.
Cass resided ca. 1891-1904. An old Bible notes "Only daughter of Sarena
(Sara) Cass.

City of Buffalo Directory at 160 Riley St. in the year 1900, the same
address as Laura B. See footnote.
4. William H. Cass born ___ 00 1846, Lincoln, England, Occupation:
Pattern Maker, married (1) in Buffalo, NY on September 18, 1877, Martha
( Mattie) E. Shaw, born ___ 00 1852, New York State, died Dec. 01 1894,
Buffalo, NY, buried Forest Lawn, Section s, Lot 8. Married (2) May 17
1900, in Buffalo, NY, Catherine Jones, born 00 1858, Buffalo, NY, died
Feb. 08 1922, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest Lawn, Section 9, Lot 299.
(Daughter of Henry Jones and ? (Not known, Foxton.) This was Catherine's
first marriage. William H. died Apr 24 1921, Buffalo, NY, buried Forest
Lawn, Section S, Lot 8. The death certificate gives age as 75, thus
birth year would be 1846. The 1865 census gave his age as 15?? thus
birth year 1850. The June 1880 census gives age as 31 thus birth year
1849. William was Martha E. Shaw's second husband. Her first was William
Stuart, who was the father of Maude. William was the father of Jessie,
who was Maude's half sister. Maude became a CASS prior to her marriage
to a CASS through Martha E.'s second marriage to William H. Cass.
Children by Martha E. Shaw:
13. i Jessie Florence Cass born Feb 22 1883, Buffalo, NY, died Mar 07
1958, Santa Cruz, CA. Her name at death was Jessie C. Coghill, and I
think it was her second marriage, She was Jessie C. Houghton when in San
Francisco.

Frederic (age 12) marked to indicate they became citizens through their
father's naturalization. Since Frederic, the youngest was born in
England in 1854 and William S. is listed as naturalized in 1865, we can
assume that the family immigrated [ 1854-1860]. (Naturalization took 5
years.)
2. James is assumed to have died in 1877, based on several clues.
Gertrude's diary has a notation that James died when John R. (his son)
was 9 years old. This calculates to 1877. A letter to William H. Cass
from his sister Mary which notes "Jim dying away from us all." He is
NOT buried in Forest Lawn. Note that James M. Cass, his father William
S. Cass and his brother Frederic are NOT buried in Buffalo, NY. I do
not know where they are buried.
3. The 1900 Federal census for 160 Riley lists Asa W. Cash ? age 76,
born June 1824 in New York as head of household. Laura, wife, age 53,
born May 1847 in Michigan, married 4 years, mother of 2 children, 1
living. Robert L. Cass, son, age 22, born June 1878 in New York, father
born in England.
4. Daughter of Charles A. Shaw born in New Hampshire in 1822, died May
16 1904 in Buffalo, and Pamelia (Not Known), born in Mass. 1817, died
June 15 1880 in Buffalo. They are buried in Forest Lawn, Section S, Lot
8.) The letters of Administration for the estate of Mattie were signed
by Maude Stuart Cass, daughter, age 17 years, and Jesse F. Cass,
daughter, 11 years. Listed as sureties, who posted bond were Laura B.
Cass w/house and lot at 160 Riley St., and Charles A. Shaw w/house and
lot at 391 Delaware.
5. The 1880 federal census for 391 Deleware Street shows Charles A. Shaw
as the head of household , no wife, 2 daughters, Francis Mott, widow,
and Mattie Cass. William H. Cass as son-in-law and Maud Cass as
granddaughter age 2.
6. Gertrude's diary has a notation: "Daddy who was 9 years old and the
eldest four children, went to work when his father died. [This
calculates to 1877]. Mary R. told others that she wouldn't have been
able to go to High School (Old Central) if it hadn't been for her
brother John. When Grandma bought a house she asked John to stay with
her until it was paid for, and he did. Without education he studied and
secured 1st class engineering papers." He worked at the F. N. Burt
Company. (Where his sister Mary R. held High office.)
7. Received this from a kind soul as the result of a web search in
August 1999.
Only thing I have is:
William H. CASS m. 18 Sep 1876 Mattie SHAW.
Mary CASS m. 9 Sep 1873 Samuel S. McCLARY.
James M. CASS m. E.HOLDEN 8 May 1866. This is probably correct.
This was in Buffalo area newspaper. No further info.

Other CASS in the same source, also Buffalo are:

Mary CASS m. William WALKER 3 Jul 1866. (Probable. She would have been

Here's some Southern Cases:
James Benjamin Case born in Bracken County, Kentucky 1833-1920.......
he was the son of John Case, born maybe in Maryland 1812-1885.
JB's mother was Susan Margaret Estep, born in Maryland 1814-1875.
JB married Caroline Wood of Bracken County 1836-1916, and together they had
12 children, all born in Bracken County, Ky and many of the descendants live
there today. My grandfather, Lawrence Case was one of those 12 children.
Anyone out there researching this bunch of Case folks?
