Hi Jim:
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. My daughter was married
March 21st and I'm still recovering! I took two days off from work to
prepare for the wedding -- fortunately Mindy did most of the
arrangements -- and I've been peddling uphill trying to make up for lost
time ever since. Supposed to have next week off for spring break, but
think I'll be at the office most of the week trying to get organized for
the end of the school year and some 90 plus meetings I need to schedule
with parents. I'm exhausted already just thinking about it!
Anyway, Linda's James Case probably isn't ours if he was born 23 Dec
1817. I don't have the dates the 1860 or 1870 census were taken, but
he gave his age as 43 and 53 in those years. If his birthdate was
23 Dec 1817, my guess is he would have given his age as 42 and 52 to the
census taker as the census was probably taken earlier in the year. I
vaguely recall that the instructions were to give their age as of June
1st but I would have to check further to make sure this is correct. I
may be confusing this with the English census.
If this was our James Case, you would expect him to name his children
after his parents but we have no Stephen or Susan among our James'
children which also makes me doubt this is our James.
I've sent Linda an e-mail but doubt if she knows much more about this
James Case as it looks like she is descended from an older brother David
Case. I really dislike web pages that use GED2HTML or GED2WWW as they
only give limited information. Without locations, I feel they are a
waste of time.
Have you had a chance to check the 1830 and 1840 Warren Co. census
records? My guess is James' parents may be listed there along with
possible siblings. That might give us some given names to zero in on.
The Warren Co. probate and land records would be something else to
check. Perhaps his father died and left him some land? Or left his land
to an older brother which caused James to pick up and move to Illinois
where he could acquire his own land.
What was the nature of the power of attorney James signed in 1878? Are
you sure this is James I or James II?
Anxious for summer to arrive so I can actually get out to a library and
do some real research!
