Hi Jeannine,
I wondered if Mary Cascadden Markendorf would fit into your part of the
family, but I didn't have the name of Hubert's wife, so I couldn't tell.
Go to the Bureau of Land Management
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ to obtain
a copy of the patent. Do a search in the state of Michigan for the Patentee
Name: Mary Markendorf. It will come up with a screen showing the Patentee
Name, etc. There is an order button on the right to order a certified copy
of the patent, but if you click on her name, it will display the patent and
you can print it. As far as I know, there is no difference from what you
would obtain by selecting order, except it is not certified.
This was a homestead entry for 160 acres on Section 13, Township 42 N, Range
1 W in Mackinac County, Michigan. The homestead papers may contain some
good genealogical material, including proof of naturalization (had to be a
U.S. citizen to obtain a homestead), the homestead application, certificate
of intention to make a claim, testimony of witnesses and the claimant, etc.
I have them on order now and can send you copies, or if you want to order
them also, use NATF Form 84.
To obtain NATF forms:
Provide your name and postal mailing address
Specify the form number
State the number of forms you need (limit 6 per order)
in an email addressed to inquire(a)nara.gov or
in a letter addressed to the National Archives and Records Administration,
Attn: NWCTB, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20408-0001
By the way, I will be able to spend a couple of days in Elgin County at the
end of August. We will be camping in Port Burwell and I hope to drag the
kids to a few of the cemeteries.
Hope this helps,
Marjean
