Marjean, I will have to get back to you on this later. I also have it that
James drank salt water and jumped overboard. But what I have that I got
from another brother who is now deceased has record of James but not Hugh.
This will all take some time. I will have to have younger brother help me
send this to you unless you have a fax number and then I could fax it all to
you. Mary

Subject: [CASCADDEN] William Henry Cascadden and Alexander Cascadden
Mary,
It would be wonderful if you, or your brother or nephew, could provide a
sketch of any new details on this family to the mail list (instead of only
off-line to John). A very large percentage of subscribers to this list are
descendants of William Henry, or his brother, Alexander. I am sure everyone
would be interested! It would also be interesting to learn how you are
connected (from which child of William Henry is your family descended)?
I will give a brief summary of this family (probably also found in the
archives of this mailing list) to bring people up to date. Jeannine or
others may correct whatever mistakes I may have here. Note this is only a
summary, most dates and places are excluded for the sake of brevity.
There are a few early manuscripts that were written about this family, most
of them I think were microfilmed by the FHL and thus are available for loan
to you local FHC. These manuscripts are:
1. "Cascaddan Family Tree," Kathleen Cascadden Rowe (1972?)
2. "The Cascadden Saga," compiled by H. N. Cascadden (1972)
3. "Comments on the Wigle Story," by H. N. Cascadden (1972) - has
information on the Cascadden family.
The most extensive of these papers is the work by Kathleen Cascadden Rowe.
She and Horatio Nelson (H. N.) Cascadden shared materials, so it is
difficult to determine the original source of some of the data they
reported.
Both Rowe and Cascadden reported that William and his brothers, Hugh and
James, left Ireland about 1790. James supposedly drank salt water on the
voyage and became so crazed he jumped overboard and died. No subsequent
records of a James Cascadden have been found in the US or Canada that would
match this brother, so either the story is true and he died on the voyage,
or there was no brother named James. No records have been found in the US or
Canada for the Hugh Cascadden named in this "three brothers" story either.
The Hugh Cascadden that Rowe assumed was William Henry's brother, was
instead his nephew. The nephew, Hugh Cascadden, son of Alexander, was born 4
Feb 1821 and died 25 Feb 1905. I have a great deal of information on him and
his 12 children, if anyone is interested.
Neither Rowe nor Cascadden reported the one brother of William Henry that is
proven by the probate records in Elgin County, Ontario, that brother being
Alexander Cascadden. Both Rowe and Cascadden did wonderful work with the
resources that had available to them. We fortunately now have many more
resources for research, such as deeds, land grants, probate records, vital
records and census records. It is with these resources that the current
Cascadden researchers have been able to correct and expand on the work of
Rowe and Cascadden. Here is a brief summary of the families of William Henry
and Alexander Cascadden.
William Henry Cascadden, parents unknown, was born 14 Feb 1773, Parish of
Drumholm, Co. Donegal, Ireland. He was married to Betsey Bayles 17 Jul 1800
at the First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, Cumberland County, PA by Robert
Davidson. Note the published version of these church records spell his name
as Cascadon, while the original film shows the spelling as Cassidon. He died
14 Mar 1850 Malahide Twp, Elgin Co, ON and is buried in the Burdick
Cemetery. Betsey was supposedly born 2 Nov 1785 Germantown, PA and died
after the 1861 census.
Children of William Henry and Betsey (Bayles) Cascadden:
(Dates of birth supposedly taken from a currently lost Bible - if anyone
knows the location of this Bible, could they please contact this list!!)
i. Alexander, b. 16 Jun 1801 PA; d. 2 Jun 1873
ii. James, b. 22 Oct 1802 PA; d. 14 Nov 1855
iii. Mary (twin), b. 2 Jul 1804 PA; d. after 1881
iv. Susannah (twin), b. 2 Jul 1804 PA; d. after 1861
v. David, b. 22 Aug 1806 PA; d. 23 Jun 1877
vi. William Henry, b. 12 Apr 1810 Upper Canada; d. 22 Feb 1897
vii. Elizabeth, b. 2 Jun 1812 Upper Canada; d. 8 Jul 1896
viii. Thomas Talbot, b. 28 Aug 1814 Upper Canada; d. 26 Nov 1876
ix. Eleanor, b. 4 Jun 1817 Upper Canada; d. 15/16 Nov 1897
x. John, b. 29 Sep 1819 Upper Canada; d. 22 May 1893
xi. Jemima, b. 21 Feb 1821 Upper Canada; d. 2 Oct 1853
xii. Allen Robmet, b. 23 Apr 1823; d. say 1841
Alexander Cascadden, parents unknown, but brother to William Henry Cascadden
Sr., was born about 1782 in Ireland, presumably in Co. Donegal. He was
married to Nancy Bale/Bales/Bayles about 1806. She was perhaps a sister or
cousin to his brother's wife. Alexander died shortly before 14 May 1851
Malahide Township, Elgin County, Canada West (now Ontario). Nancy died after
9 Jan 1855.
Children of Alexander and Nancy (Bales) Cascadden (all born Upper Canada):
i. Mary, b. 1806-1809; d. 1870-1880
ii. William, b. 7 Jul 1810; d. 7 Feb 1879
iii. Nancy, b. 5 May 1811; d. 24 Mar 1866
iv. Elizabeth, b. 1812-1815; d. 3 Sep 1874
v. Eleanor, b. 1817-1818; d. after 1880
vi. Hugh, b. 4 Feb 1821; d. 25 Feb 1905
vii. Margaret, b. say 1823; d. after 1841
viii. Robert, b. 5 Mar 1824; d. 30 Mar 1908
ix. Lydia, b. 3 Nov 1825; d. 2 Dec 1888. Lydia is interesting in that Rowe
accidentally placed her as the third wife of her first cousin, Alexander
Cascadden, son of William Henry Cascadden. In fact, there was no third wife
of Alexander, and Lydia never married (although she had a son, Nathaniel
Robert Cascadden).
x. Mariah, b. ca. 1832; d. after 1880
xi. Sarah Jane, b. ca. 1832; d. after 1881
Mary, I am sure we all look forward to whatever you and/or your brother or
nephew may be able to add.
Regards,
Marjean
(Descendant of Elizabeth Cascadden, daughter of Alexander and Nancy)

Subject: RE: [CASCADDEN] James Cascadden Family of Canada
John, William Henry was born on 2-14-1773. He married an Elizabeth Beals
in 1800 in Germantown Pa. He came to USA in 1790 with Brothers Hugh &
James. William Henry had five children in PA. The last of the children
were born in Ontario, Canada. They left PA. prior to 1810 and went to
Aylmer, Ont.
William filed on his Aylmer farm, marked as a rectangle on the map of
Malahide Concession in the Elgin Atlas of 1876, in the year of 1814--No. 6,
Lot 24. William has been described as a farmer and harness maker.
I found out from my older brother John that his son who is Morman is really
into the geneology and could probably help you better than I can. His name
is Robert Cascaddan and he lives in California. His e-mail address is:
scaddan(a)pacifier.com.
If there is anything else I can do to help you, feel free to contact me.
What state do you live in? It is nice to know more family. Mary
