"The activities of Thomas Cascaden Jr. and William Galloway epitomized
the Waterloo spirit and the multiple roles city leaders assumed.
Cascaden initiated the campaign to create the factory district of
Westfield, and Galloway was behind the decisions of Litchfield
Manufacturing, the Mason-Maytag Motor Car, and Dart Truck Co. to
establish factories in Waterloo," the book states.
Cascaden (and before him his father, Thomas Sr.) was the city's leading
industrialist -- operating a factory at 801 Commercial St. that
manufactured gasoline engines, feed mills and farm implements. In 1910,
the firm merged with the Wm. Galloway Co.
