Hello Marjean, I trust that you had a good time on your trip to Elgin
County (I nevi you!!). At the end of this last note you mention that you
had ordered the homestead papers for Mary Markendorf. I was wondering if
you have received them as of yet, and was wondering if you wouldn't mind
sending me a copy. I'll pay for or split your cost for getting them since
she belongs to my line and I would have eventually ordered them anyway.
What ever you prefer.
I did manage to get some good time in at the Carlsbad Library here in
California last month. They have a lot of the pre 1900 census films in their
collection. Didn't find too much on the way of Cascadden. But there was an
Arthur Cascaden and his family consistently in these census' for Michigan.
States he was born in Ireland.
In 1850 Arthur(32 yrs) and his wife, Hannah (26 yrs b. in NY) are in Battle
Creek, Calhoun Co., MI
In 1860 The two above (45yrs and 36yrs) plus 3 others who do not appear to
be related, Same town.
In 1870 Same (54 yrs and 46 yrs) plus one 17 yr old male whose name I
couldn't read, same town.
In 1860 in Columbia Twp., Van Buren Co., MI there was a David Cascadden, age
23, born in Canada, was a labourer enumerated with John Barnard and his
family.
At one point I got a little excited because I came across the name Susan
CASKEDDIN in the 1860 MI census for Medina Twp, Lenawee Co. I thought
perhaps this could have been William Henry & Elizabeth's daughter. This
Susan was listed as being born in Pennsylvania but her age was stated as 80
yrs. So she would have been to old (Too much wishful thinking on my part).
Besides that Susan was said to have married a Kennedy.
For those of you with CARSCALLEN In 1870 in Aranac Twp, Bay Co., Michigan:
Carscallen, Benj., B
George
William
I have a little more info on these names if anyone is interested I can
e-mail it to them.
That is about all I found.
Jeannine
Hi Jeannine,
I wondered if Mary Cascadden Markendorf would fit into your part of the
family, but I didn't have the name of Hubert's wife, so I couldn't tell.
Go to the Bureau of Land Management
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ to
obtain
a copy of the patent. Do a search in the state of Michigan for the
Patentee
Name: Mary Markendorf. ..... The homestead papers may contain some
good genealogical material, including proof of naturalization (had to be a
U.S. citizen to obtain a homestead), the homestead application, certificate
of intention to make a claim, testimony of witnesses and the claimant, etc.
I have them on order now and can send you copies, or if you want to order
them also, use NATF Form 84.
