Hi,
I was recently in contact with a descendant of Eliza Ann Cascadden, daughter
of John Cascadden and Martha Ann Merrill of Elgin County, Canada West.
Eliza Ann's paternal grandparents were William Henry Cascadden and
Elizabeth Bayles/Bales/Beal. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Merrill
and Rebecca Fairchild. Eliza was born about 1844, probably in Malahide
Township, Elgin County. She appeared in the 1851/2 census with her
Grandmother Elizabeth Cascadden and Uncle James Cascadden. In the 1861
census she is living with her Uncle Joseph Merrill in a household that also
included her Grandmother Rebecca Merrill.
I lost track of Eliza after 1861, although the Rowe manuscript on the
descendants of William Henry Cascadden, said she married a Clay. Well,
Eliza Ann moved to Simcoe County to work as a servant in a household in the
Town of Collingwood. In the 1871 census index, she appears as Eliza
Carscadden, note the "R" in the name. I did not trace her to Simcoe county
because I knew there was a Carscadden family living there, and assumed this
Eliza in the 1871 census was part of that family.
Eliza Ann married Moses Clay and had at least four children: George Wallace,
Alven Stanley, Martha and Minerva Ruth.
I hope this information helps others researching in the Simcoe county area.
I know how hard it is to try to place people whom don't seem to fit, but are
living in the same area. Isabel, did you find Eliza when you were working
on your book? Also, has anyone researching in Simcoe County found the
marriage record of Eliza Ann Cascadden/Carscadden to Moses Clay?
