Hello!
I'm new to this list and discovered it while searching for my recently discovered
Cascadden ancestry. I am descended from William Henry Cascadden Sr. and
Elizabeth (Betsey Bayles) Cascadden's daughter (one of the twins), Susannah
Cascadden b. 2 Jul 1804 in PA, USA d. abt. 1861 Malahide Twp., Elgin Co.
Upper Canada. Susannah married Reuben Judd Kennedy b. 1 Dec 1789,
Upper Canada. Reuben Kennedy is listed in the 1828 Militia Men of Malahide
Township in Upper Canada as Qtr. Master, commencing 14 Jul 1826 and was
the first settler on Lot 26, con. 6 in Elgin Co. Reuben Kennedy is buried in Seville
or Quaker Cemetery, Malahide Twp., Elgin Co. ON. He died 6 Mar 1850 in Aylmer,
Elgin Co. Upper Canada, aged 60 yrs., 3mo. 5 days.
In the 1851 Census Susannah (Cascadden) Kennedy is listed as
born in Pennsylvania, Methodist, 47 years of age and widowed. Listed as
living with her are the following whom I am assuming were her children:
William, b. Upper Canada age 31
John, age 24
James, age 18
Elizabeth, age 16 (I am descended from Elizabeth, nickname Betsey)
Francis, age 14
Thomas P., age 12
Alfred, age 6
In the 1861 Census she is listed as Susan Kennedy, Wesleyan Methodist, age 57, widowed.
Living with her at this time are:
William, b. Ontario, age 30
Francis, age 24
Thomas, age 21
George, age 19
Alfred, age 15
Matthews, Melissa, age 22
Cascadden, Elizabeth, born US, aged 76, widow
Matthews, Thomas, carpenter, born Ontario, age 30
Matthews, Betsey (this is Elizabeth from the 1851 census) age 26
Matthews, Mary, age 10
Matthews, Colin Brock, age 2
Susannah (Cascadden) Kennedy's daughter Elizabeth had married Thomas Matthews
and were obviously living with Susannah with their 2 children, Mary and Colin Brock,
her other children, a relative of Thomas Matthews, Melissa and, very interestingly, her
mother, Elizabeth (Bayles) Cascadden, wife of William Henry Cascadden Sr.
There certainly were alot of people in that household at the time of this census.
By the time of the 1871 Census, there is no listing for Susannah Kennedy as she was
deceased by this time nor is there any listing for her other children that I've found
so far,
but there is a listing for my g-g-grandparents:
Matthews, Thomas, age 41
Matthews, Elizabeth age 35
Colin, age 11
Emma, age 7
Alma, age 1
Alma Matthews is my great-grandmother and she married John Edwin Kelly at Matthew's
Mills,
in Kinglake, Houghton Twp. Norfolk Co. ON. Thomas Matthews d. 1917 buried Kinglake
Cemetery, Norfolk Co. ON and Elizabeth (Kennedy) Matthews d. 3 Feb. 1908. Thomas Matthews
is listed in the 1877 Atlas of Norfolk County as being a farmer and having a grist mill
near Kinglake,
ON.
This is my Cascadden information. I have only just begun researching this side of my
family tree
a few days ago and I was very excited to find this list! It's only a short time since
I first found out
about my Cascadden line, finding this mailing list and reading through the various
postings
has proved to be VERY informative and useful in my search!
Any other information anyone might have about William Henry Cascadden Sr., his wife Betsey
(Bayles) Cascadden, their children and especially about Susannah Cascadden-Kennedy
would be most appreciated. I am especially interested in any information in Aylmer Museum
or Library or at the St. Thomas Library in Elgin Co. as I am planning on visiting there
myself
sometime soon. Would also love to find out where Susannah Kennedy's gravesite is, as
there
is no listing for her in Burdick Cemetery where some of the other Cascadden family is
buried,
neither is she listed in the Quaker Cemetery where her husband Reuben Kennedy is buried
either.
Thank you for reading my rather lengthy first-time post to this list!
Sincerely,
Diane G.
