Have just joined this list.
This is my first attempt at research in California.
I have just obtained an ancesor's AUSTRALIAN Probate
which mentions that he
left an Estate in California. I assume this was land
because of his numerous
land dealings in NSW, Australia, but it could also
be other investments.
This Californian Estate was excluded from his

Francis SMITH (husband) b. Felpham, Sussex, England
Married FrancEs FIELLIETTE (wife) can't find where.
3 children born in Sussex, England between 1832 &
1 child born in Sydney, NSW Australia 25 Jul 1841
1851 English Census Francis (a widower) is shown
visiting friends in London.
Francis SMITH, Gentleman, died in Sydney, Australia
on 5 Feburary 1882 and
is buried in Sydney.
Probate # 6790 was granted on 28 April 1882
He owned a substantial amount of prime land in the
Sydney area as did his
son Frederick SMITH.
The WILL of Francis SMITH nominated his friend
Ebenezer HANCHETT of
Watsonville, California as the Executor and Trustee
of his Califionian
Estate and his son Frederick SMITH Executor of his
Estate in Sydney
Can anyone guide me to where I can obtain;
1. a copy of Probate from California or elsewhere in
2. details of his land transactions in California.
As I can't find a marriage in England for Francis &
Frances and he/they are
missing from 1841 - 1851, and I can't find a death
in England or Australia
for his wife FrancEs, I wondered if maybe the family
spent time in
California during 1841 - 1851 or after that period,
or perhaps travelled
often between Australia and California.
At which shipping port would he have entered
Any help or guidance very much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
in Sydney, NSW
