Man, 88, kills wife, then himself
SANTA CRUZ - Apparently despondent over illness, an elderly man shot and killed his wife
of 64 years and then turned the fun on himself Sunday night in their Westside home.
Dead are James R. Scudder, 88, and his wife, Anna, 86, of 704 Laurent St.
Police were summoned to the address just before 9:30 p.m. by a caller who identified
himself as James Schudder, who said there had been a shooting.
Detectives theorize Scudder called after shooting his wife in the head as she slept on a
sofa in a small den of the couple's immaculate Spanish-style home. After placing the
call, they believe, he sat down in a chair near his wife and turned the 22 caliber Ruger
Officers found Scudder dead in the chair. Firefighters and paramedics attempted to revive
Anna Scudder, who died shortly after arrival at Community Hospital.
Police said they found a letter, believed to be written by Scudder, to a relative in which
he said both he and his wife required surgery and they feared they would end up requiring
total care in a convalescent hospital. The letter said that would consume their life
savings and they did not want to become dependent.
