I am trying to solve the unknowns about one side of my Portuguese ancestry.
Here is what I know.
My great grandmother, Maria Victorina da Bettencourt, was born 14 January 1878 in
Watsonville CA. (Her brother, Manuel, was born 16 May 1875 in Watsonville, CA)
Maria was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on 23 February 1878.
Her father is: Joao Victorino de Bettencourt, b: abt 1850/1; son of Joao
Her mother is: Anna de Coracoa de San Jose, b: abt 1855/6; daughter of Antonio Texeria de
Avila and Maria Josephina de Coracoa de San Jose
They were married 6 August 1874 in Watsonville. Marriage on file at Santa Cruz County
Her siblings were Manuel b: abt 1847/9; Maria Avila da San Jose b: abt 1850; and
Francisca Josetha Jesus de San Jose b: abt 1855/6
They all were from the Azores, no idea where.
Joao died in 1880 at roughly 30 years old; Anna died in 1881 at about 26 years of age.
The two children were taken in by relatives, with the son, Manuel, eventually going to the
orphanage to live until he was of age.
Maria was married in Salinas, Monterey, CA to Pedro Silveira Faustino on 10 Aug 1896.
The marriage license did not have anything regarding her parentage.
I did not know what I was doing 30 years ago when I first started looking for them,
meaning I did not look for church records.
I am looking for a very reliable, knowledgeable genealogist for hire (who is reasonable).
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
