Hello List,
I am new to the list so please bear with me. I have stumbled across
my first "wall" in researching my Cary ancestors. I am hoping someone
might be able to help me out. Let me tell you what I know...
Catharine Cary married James Harrison Haxton on the 13th of March 1823
in Butler County, Ohio (Record of Marriage vol. 1, pg. 178). They had
10 children; Wm. Bennett (1824), Levi H. (1826), Sarah Candace (1828),
Orin L. (1831), Oliver Perry ((1833) My Ancestor)), James H. jr. (1836),
Elizabeth Angeline (1838), Thomas Jefferson (1840), John Nelson (1843),
and Sanford M.G. (1845). The first three children were born in Ohio and
the remaining in Indiana. James dies in 1848 in Fountain County,
Indiana and Catharine dies later in 1885/1886 in Madison County, Iowa.
Here are my problems and questions. I cannot PROVE Catharine's
parents. Many sources (
Ancestry.com, Mormon Site etc.) list her parents
as William Cary and Ruth Sweet. They also say that she was born in New
York. The problems that I find with this information is that Catharine
states on several census' that she was born in Pennsylvania. She says
this 3 times that I can find - 1850 Indiana Census, 1860 Indiana Census
and 1880 Iowa Census. In the latter census she also states that her
father was born in Penn and her mother in Ohio. Also her children
cannot agree on where either parent is born. Three sons in the 1880
Iowa Census say that Catharine was born in Ohio and one son states
Penn. Again, these same children disagree where Dad is born too. I
have him being born in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Also I have found on Ancestry and the Mormon site another husband for
Catharine. Apparently, this other Catharine married a David Devoll in
1824 and had other children besides what I have mentioned.
I do not yet have a obituary for Catharine from Iowa, I am hoping
there is one, of course. I haven't yet looked in Pennsylvania for my
Catharine yet, that is my next step. I am hoping someone from the list
has some suggestions or information on my Catharine. I'd love the
help. Thanks, Tina
