Hello,
I went through the archives and see that I haven't posted in three years:
Jesse A. (Annis?) Cary, my great great grandfather, was born in upstate
New York on April 10, 1842. According to his obituary and notes in a bible
at the age of five his father was killed by a falling tree and he went to
live with relatives in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada for two years (can find
Annis's and Cary's but no relationship established). From there he went
to live with an uncle in Tekonsha/Fredonia near Marshall, Calhoun Co.,
Michigan. He and an uncle left during the gold rush, but Jesse only made
it as far as Pike's Peak and returned. An 1850 Census shows a Jesse
Car(e)y (age 10 - 2 yrs older) living with Jesse & Polly (Waters) Annis
and children Jesse and Cynthia. There was another Jesse Car(e)y living in
Tekonsha at the same time according to Civil War enlistment records. I
have been in touch with an Annis researcher who has Jesse Annis' siblings
- one sister Betsy was married twice and nothing is known about the first
marriage. But some papers say that Jesse C's mother was also deceased
when he was young, and Betsy would have been over 40 when she had Jesse.
Jesse Cary named his son William Annis Cary and his daughter Edith. Jesse
Annis and siblings were born in Canandaigua, NY. There are Cary's that
lived in Tekonsha, but have not been able to find a connection. Have been
trying to find out who Jesse Cary's parents are and where he was born.
Thank you,
Denise Shooks
