Dan, below is the text of your thorough response:
For many years there has been a legitimate question regarding two Barnabus
Carys. Seth C. Carys book " John Cary, The Plymouth Pilgrim ", became the
standard for early Cary genealogy began the dilemma by reporting on page
83, section 28-A,
" Joseph Cary, son of Samuel, Sec. 13, b. Bridgewater, 1705; m. Anne, dau
of Elihu Brett, 1732.
Children: I. Barnabus, b. 1733; he was a blacksmith; served in Col.
Nichols Regiment of New Hampshire troops for nearly four months at West
point, in 1780; m. Mary, dau. Of Rev. Matthew Short, the first settled
minister of Attleboro, Mass., 1759; went to Rindge, N. H., 1768, and
settled in the east side of town, where he d. 1795; .".
THIS WAS NOT CORRECT
From Cary Ancestries including Seth Cary, John born in England married
Elizabeth, there second son was Francis, he married Hannah, their first son
was Samuel who married Mary Poole, their first son was Joseph who married
Anna Brett. Joseph and Mary had three children, the first son was Barnabus,
born July3, 1733 and died in Pittston, Luzerne Co.PA, July 23, 1788. This
Barnabus married Mary Scott who also died in Luzerne Co, PA. Her parents
were Daniel and Mary Scott of Scituate, RI.
In 1910 Seth C. Cary wrote ( to Mrs. Kennedy of Scranton, PA) requesting
information regarding Barnabus because questions arose after he published
his book in 1908." From documents in the CT Historical Soc, Cary folder.
From Bulletin No. 9, May 1910, " The John Cary Descendants,"
by Seth Cary;
page 59, item 2, reads, "Barnabus and Barnabus! These good men
are
causing us no little anxiety...." Seth tried to explain the two but only
concluded with further questions.
Luther Cary wrote an addenum to Seth's book, which can be found in better
libraries. It is in the Ct Historical Lib. Hartford, CT. To summarize.
Attleboro Vital records:
"Mary Short and Barnabus CRARY of Providence, RI, married Feb.24, 1759.
The first two children born, their surname was CRARY the rest was CARY."
From " History of rindge, NH" Barnabus CARY was a blacksmith
who removed
from Attleborough, Mass, 1768. Mr. Cary died 1795, age 76 yrs.( He was
born
in 1719.) and his wife Mary d. Feb 14, 1780, aged 55. It continues giving
the details that Seth cary quoted in the Pilgrim
The above is from Attleboro Vital records, and Dagett's, History of
Attleboro, Mass.
There is other documentation as well. Barnabus Cary son of Joseph was one
of the first settlers in the Wyoming Valley and that in itself is well
substaniated. What is very scary is that the DAR has admitted many years
ago members based on the false notion the the NH Barnabus was one of the
same as the Pennsylvania barnabus. The PA Barnabus lived in Dutchess Co, NY
before travelling to PA. He was driven out of PA by the Pennamites in abt
1768 and returned to Dutchess Co before the Connecticut settlers decided
there was strength in numbers.
I hope you understand, additional work to fully document this has to be
done. Your help would be appreciated.
Kind Regards,
