To the several people interested in Barnabus CARY/CRARY of Providence, I abstracted
the information below from four Providence deeds as filmed by the LDS. The deeds
indicated his origin and wife's name but did not indicate that his name was ever CRARY
rather than CARY.
1.) James & Eliz. Brown, merchant of Providence, grantor to Barnabus Cary, blacksmith
of Dighton, grantee; for 600£ a lot of land in Providence; dated 11/18/1758; recorded
10/29/1759, vol. 17:11; witn, Issac Corey & Joseph Snow.
2.) Nat'l Day, yeoman of Providence, grantor to Barnabus Cary, blacksmith of
Providence, grantee; for 562£ old tenor; a small lot of land and dwelling house near Stowe
Pond, bordering John Field and Ezra Hutchins; dated 11/13/1759, recorded 11/29/1760, vol.
16:95; witn, Geo. Taylor & Geo Taylor, Jr.
3.) Mary & Barnabus Cary, blacksmith of Providence, grantors to Richard Seaver,
chaisemaker of Providence, grantee; for $100; a lot of land in Providence originally
bought from James Brown; dated 6/23/1759; vol. 17:40.
4.) Mary & Barnabus Cary, blacksmith of Providence, grantors to John Hoyle Jr.,
gentleman of Providence; for 1,400£ old tenor; land and dwelling house originally bought
from Nat'l Day; dated 12/22/1760, recorded 2/24/1761, vol. 16:100; witn, Issac Corey
& John Corpe.
Barnabus was subsequently sued by Nathaniel Day, yeoman of Providence in an action from
debt of damage. The writ was not served, as the sheriff noted, "neither body nor
estate to be found", presumably meaning that Barnabus was no longer resident in
Providence County. Judgement was granted to the plaintiff in the amount of 579£ on
9/5/1761 Providence Court of Common Pleas, record book 4, p. 428. Original court papers
are not found in the archives.
I would be interested if anyone has records from Dighton, MA on Barnabus.
