The following statement extracted from the Revolutionary War Pension
Application of William Cary was sent from the National Archives in
1935...
"William Cary, as his signature is found in the claim, was
born April 14,
1756 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, names of his parents not
stated.
(Thomas and Sarah "Sally" (Kemp) CARY)
"While residing in said Chesterfield County, he served in
the Virginia
militia, as follows: in 1777, two months as private in Captain
Barnet
Marcom's company; two months under Captain E. Bow; six weeks in
Captain
Branch's company; two months in Captain David Patterson's company;
two
months in Captain Henry Cheatham's company, and was in the battle of
Petersburg; two tours of two months each, one under Captain Francis
Smith
and one under Captain Scott, a part of the time under Colonel Robert
Good.
"He moved from Chesterfield County, Virginia in 1808 to
Claiborne County,
Tennessee, and in October, 1829 moved to Cumberland County,
Kentucky.
"William Cary was allowed pension on his application
executed August 13,
1832, then a resident of Cumberland County, Kentucky.
"There are no data in this claim concerning the family of
William Cary."
William Cary was married to Hannah Burton before 1781 and is
reported to
have had as many as nine children, one of which was my
g-g-g-grandmother,
Elizabeth Cary who married Higgason Cox, Jr. I would appreciate any
further information about the family of this William Cary.
