Cyrene Taylor was the daughter of William Taylor and a full blooded French women from
New Orleans ( I believe her name was Carter). In 1819 the family moved from Richmond,
Virginia to Christian Co, Kentucky. Cyrene and her sister Priscilla, were cared for by a
negro nanny. Their mother married a second time.
In 1834, Miles Cary and his wife moved from Christian County, Kentucky to Missouri. The
1840 Census of Barry County, Missouri shows a Miles Cary family. Four children were born
to miles and Cyrene Cary before they began their nest trek. Oregon first came to Miles
Cary attention through a pamphlet written by Dr. Whitman and discovered a neighbor, Squire
Vivian, a merchant on a business trip to St. Louis.
Collecting their belongings into wagons, the Cary family joined a wagon train that
assembled at Fitzhugh's Mill near Independence, Mo. Other members of this train were:
Peter H. Burnett, !st governor of California, George Beale, Jacob Myers, Thomas Owen, and
Chauncey Spencer. On May 20th, 1843. the jouney to Oregon began. They drove a
considerable band of cattle, expecting to use them for food if necessary or have the start
of a heard in the new country. Accounts of history differ as to the guides. One account
states that the guide to the Green River was Capt. Gantt, an old army officer. There, Dr.
Whitman took overand later "Sticcus" , an old Cayuse Indian guided them from
Fort Hall to Dalles. Another version says that H. J. Hembree was the guide. Jesse
Applegate took over command of the party on the trip from the Coumbia River. They reached
Vancouver November 11 and spent the remainder of the year Linnton (Now Portland). The
cattle were left at the Dalles for the
winter. The Cary's experienced the share of hard luck losing a daughter at Fort Hall
and another at Fort Bridger from Spotted Fever, called the Rocky Mountain Fever. They
didn't know the cause and used Sage Brush Tea for the remedy.
The winter of 1843, Miles Cary found employment with Dr. McLaughlin in a grist mill in
Oregon City. The following year the family took up a Donation land claim of 640 acres on
the north side of the Yamhill River what is now Carlton. Then ib 1849, Miles was drawn to
the California gold fields intending to make his home. However, on Feb. 8, 1850, Miles and
Cyrene Cary appear in person at Benicia, California and sold lot 15, block 27 for $3,000.
Due to the constant illness while at Benicia, they returned to Oregon. A permanant house
was established near St. Joseph and here the family grew until saddened by the death of
the father in 1858.
Cyrene Cary then moved the family to Laffayette where three sons and three
daughter's preceeded her in death. All are buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, now
Pioneer Cemetery, Yamhill County, Oregon.
Proof: Family records starting with births Cyrene and Miles Cary, children's names,
birth dates and deaths submitted from the Cary family Bible belonging to Raymond P. Bird,
Nampa, Idaho, 1965
