Judy
Descendants of James Carrig (Carey)
Generation No. 1
1. JAMES1 CARRIG. He married JULIA DONOVAN Bef. 1822 in County Cork,
Ireland.
Notes for JAMES CARRIG:
This identification of James Carrig as the father of James Carey might
be in error. However, James Carrig is the only father with a name
similar to Carey who had a son. James, born in the approximate time
period of James Carey's birthdate and in the Catholic Parish of
Clonakilty.
Children of JAMES CARRIG and JULIA DONOVAN are:
i. CATHERINE2 CARRIG, b. Abt. February 28, 1822.
Notes for CATHERINE CARRIG:
Christening: From Clonakilty Catholic Parish records, Cork and Ross
Diocese, County Cork. "Baptized Cath of James Carrig and Julia Donavan.

Diocese. County Cork. " Baptized Florence of James Carrig Julia
Donovan. Sponsors were Daniel Croneen. Margaret Huit? Place-Liselane.
"Note that Florence could be either male or female name. Since Florence
Donovan was a male and probably Julia Donovan's father, one assumes that
this baby Florence was male.

Notes for DENIS CARRIG:

Diocese, County Cork. "Baptized Denis of James Carrig and Julia Donovan.

Generation No. 2
2. JAMES2 CAREY (JAMES1 CARRIG) was born Abt. February 05, 1830 in
Clonakilty, Cork Ireland, and died May 01, 1912 in South Ring, County
Cork, Ireland. He married CATHERINE (MARY) LYNCH August 19, 1849 in
South Ring, County Cork, Ireland, daughter of FIRST LYNCH and ELLEN
KIRBY.
Notes for JAMES CAREY:
James Carey Biography:
From 1901 census of South Ring, was listed as illiterate agricultural
labourer, widowed, age 72 who speaks Irish and English. No will was
found. He was also listed in the 1911 census of South Ring living alone
in a two room house built of stone or brick with a slate or tin roof on
a farm owned or leased by Henry Austin. Illiteracy was quite common
amongst the 19th century Irish as the English did not allow Catholic
Irish to attend schools. They could attend only if they were
Protestant. Some attended so-called "hedge-row schools" but punishment
was severe if they were caught.
Christening: From early Clonakilty Catholic baptismal Records. James was
the son of James Carrig and Julia Donovan of Liselane( a small dairy
farming area just a few miles north of Clonakilty). Sponsors were
Jeremiah Kingstone and Margaret Cullinane. Theresa Parks, the daughter
of Maurice Carey, listed his name in the obituary of Maurice Carey as
James Richard Carey but there is no other evidence for this middle name.
Marriage: From the Catholic Parish records of Clonakilty in the
Cork/Ross Diocese of County Cork is the listing August 19 1849. In
matrimonio conjunct. Jacobium Carey and Catherinum Lynch. Witnesses,
Jacobo Brickley and Peter Lynch" In other words, Joined in matrimony
were James cCarey and Catherine Lynch. Witnesses were James Brickley
and Peter Lynch.
Death From Civil Birth, Death and Marriage records at General Registry
Office, Dublin, Ireland. Death was listed as due to senile decay with
no medical attendant present. His age was listed as 86 which is
probably not accurate.
Notes for CATHERINE (MARY) LYNCH:
Catherine Lynch:
Death: Death certificate from the Skibbereen Courthouse, County Cork,
Ireland, lists paralysis of three weeks duration as cause of death. No
medical attendant was present. Her son John Carey, was the informant
and was apparently illiterate as he signed with an X. She was listed as
55 years of age.
Biography: Her full name was given by her grand-daughter. Theresa Carey
Parks, in the obiturar for Maurice Carey as Catherine Elizabeth Carey.
I have seen no other evidence for the middle name.

FRIENDS PAY LAST TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MAURICE CAREY.
Amid a large gathering of sorrowning firends and relatives, he was laid
to rest in the family plot in Rose Memorial Park where the final rites
of the Catholic Church were held. His six sons served as pall bearers.
Mr. Carey, son of James Richard Carey, and Catherine Elizabeth Lynch,
was born in Darrer. near Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland.on May 25th
1853. As a young man while still in his teens. mr. Carey came to the
United States, locating in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he remained for
several years and there married a boyhood friend, Mary Brickley, from
his native home, who pre-deceased him some thirty seven years ago. In
the early seventies, he joined a cousin in Mendocino City and his wife
joined him there several months thereafter. Here he continued to make
his home until 1885 when he purchased the ranch home on Virgin Creek
near Fort Bragg. He leaves surviving him seven children, Maurice R.
Carey, Sylvester F. Carey, William T. Carrey, Daniel C, Carey, all of
Sanfrancisco. James H Carey of Vallejo, Jerome C. Carey of Livermore,
California and Theresa Parks of this place. He also leaves ten
grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs Catherine
Hurley of Albion. Two sons, John D. Carey and Lawrence A Carey, as well
as a brother, John Carey, passed away many years ago. Mr. Carey at the
time of his death was and for many years had been a member of the
Improved Order of Red Men Santana Tribe and the Maccabees. He will be
remembered as a man of sterling character. devout in his religious
belief but always tolerant of the beliefs of others. He was a man who
enjoyed great civic pride and will be recalled as one of the early
pioneers in this section who many years ago almost singlehanded made a
strenuous fight for the establishment of the local Union High School.
His demise will be regretted by a host of friends and removes from our
midst one of the few remaining settlers who were instrumental in
changing this coast from a rugged wilderness to its present status. Mr
Carey had enjoyed robust health all his life up to about six years ago
when he suffered a slight paralytic stroke. He partially regained his
health but several months ago continuously became subject to severe
colds and finally on March 2 1936 contacted bronchial pneumonia which
was the immediate cause of his death."
The reference in the obiturary to Darrer. Ireland as birthplace is
incorrect.

South Ring, just a mile or two north of Clonakilty. However the
original Catholic Parish records list the place of birth as Farran(See
