Hi Chuck:
I too have family that was named Cary or Carey here is an obit. that mentions
Ohio if you think you may be family let me know.
Judy
FRIENDS PAY LAST TRIBUTE TO THE LATE MAURICE CAREY.
Amid a large gathering of sorrowning firends and relatives, he was laid to rest
in the family plot in Rose Memorial Park where the final rites of the Catholic
Church were held. His six sons served as pall bearers. Mr. Carey, son of
James Richard Carey, and Catherine Elizabeth Lynch, was born in Darrer. near
Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland.on May 25th 1853. As a young man while still
in his teens. mr. Carey came to the United States, locating in Cincinnati,
Ohio, where he remained for several years and there married a boyhood friend,
Mary Brickley, from his native home, who pre-deceased him some thirty seven
years ago. In the early seventies, he joined a cousin in Mendocino City and
his wife joined him there several months thereafter. Here he continued to make
his home until 1885 when he purchased the ranch home on Virgin Creek near Fort
Bragg. He leaves surviving him seven children, Maurice R. Carey, Sylvester F.
Carey, William T. Carrey, Daniel C, Carey, all of Sanfrancisco. James H Carey
of Vallejo, Jerome C. Carey of Livermore, California and Theresa Parks of this
place. He also leaves ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren and a
sister, Mrs Catherine Hurley of Albion. Two sons, John D. Carey and Lawrence A
Carey, as well as a brother, John Carey, passed away many years ago. Mr. Carey
at the time of his death was and for many years had been a member of the
Improved Order of Red Men Santana Tribe and the Maccabees. He will be
remembered as a man of sterling character. devout in his religious belief but
always tolerant of the beliefs of others. He was a man who enjoyed great civic
pride and will be recalled as one of the early pioneers in this section who
many years ago almost singlehanded made a strenuous fight for the establishment
of the local Union High School. His demise will be regretted by a host of
friends and removes from our midst one of the few remaining settlers who were
instrumental in changing this coast from a rugged wilderness to its present
status. Mr Carey had enjoyed robust health all his life up to about six years
ago when he suffered a slight paralytic stroke. He partially regained his
health but several months ago continuously became subject to severe colds and
finally on March 2 1936 contacted bronchial pneumonia which was the immediate
cause of his death."
The reference in the obiturary to Darrer. Ireland as birthplace is incorrect.
The Correct place is Darrara or Darrary which was the area surrounding South
Ring, just a mile or two north of Clonakilty. However the original Catholic
Parish records list the place of birth as Farran(See Christening notes).

Dear CARY-L members,
I've been just lurking since I signed up awhile ago and haven't seen
anybody who seems at all related to me. So I'll post some information on my
own CAREY (note the correct spelling!) line just in case somebody happens
to know anything...
My farthest-back ancestor that I know anything about is:
George Carey
b 1759 (?) in Essex County NJ (?)
d 1846 in Paulding or Miami County OH
m Phoebe Clark
b 1765 (?) in NJ
d Feb 1850 in OH
The information on George and Phoebe is very sketchy. We believe they
migrated from the area around Elizabeth, NJ, to the Miami River valley of
OH, around 1810 where George worked on the Miami Canal as a stonemason.
They seem to have made the trip West along with a number of other
interrelated families. See my posting to the Miami County GenWeb page at:
<
http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Miami/nj_mig.html>
for some comments on this migration.
George and Phoebe had 8 (?) children who all seem to have been born in NJ
and who all moved to OH with their parents:
John (1787-1835)
David (1790-1832)
Dana (1792-?)
Thomas (1795-?)
Isaac (1799-1850)
Benjamin Clark (1801-1877) <- my g-g-grandpa
Jacob (1802-?)
Sarah (1807-1863) m James Hudson
The children's birth dates given here are questionable. George, Phoebe and
some of the children may be buried in Raper Chapel cemetery, near Troy, OH.
Benjamin is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery at Piqua. The descendants
scattered to other parts of western OH in the late 1800's. This line has
always insisted on spelling its surname as CAREY, in spite of efforts of
everybody to add and subtract letters from it.
If this sounds like the heritage of anybody else out there, please contact
me directly or post to the list. I have a lot more information to share.
