I have been researching my gr-gr-grandfather, Benedict Waters Carey, b. in PA in 1833,
died in Juneau Co., WI between 1900-05. Benedict and his wife Anna E., and Benedict's
brother Nathan (b. PA 1837) start showing up in the Wisconsin census in 1860. Nathan
eventually ended up in Tomah, Monroe Co., WI. Benedict sometimes shows up in records as
(W. B. Carey).
Reading this thread, I sought out the "John Cary, Pilgrim" book referred to, and
also found a book called "Eleazer Cary Family" by May A. Cary Smith published at
about the same time. Mrs. Smith refers to herself as president of the Cary Family
Association of Wyoming and Lackawanna Counties. She lists a "Waters Carey" who
married an "Annie ____", and a "Nathan" as children of Nathan Cary,
son of Benjamin and Mercy Abbott Carey. She also lists others of their siblings who ended
up in Tomah, Wisconsin. This sounds suspiciously like my line!
The "John Cary Pilgrim" book also refers to a Waters Cary, but puts him as the
son of Elias (born 1819), the son of Nathan, and grandson of Benjamin and Mercy Cary.
Elias would be too young to have fathered sons in 1833 and 1836...
Anyway, does anyone out there have any ideas on the accuracy/dependability of either of
these books on the Benjamin and Mercy Cary lines? This line of research has been driving
me nuts for quite a while, so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
