John Cary, son of Benjamin and Thankful did not move to Beekman with others of his family.
He lived his entire life in Providence Co., RI and died there quite old ca1824. His
obituary reads, "A few days since, Mr. John Cary, aged 89 years. A musket ball which
was lodged in his neck, near the left shoulder, in an action with a French ship in the war
of 1756, remained there when he was placed in his coffin. He had been for several years
under the care of the Overseer of the Poor. His wife, of the same age, still survives
him."
Of course there are other descendants of Benjamin with the given name of John. The above
John had a son John Cary who died in 1826 on a voyage to Havana Cuba. This John also had a
grandson John born in Cranston, RI in 1804.
Benjamin's son Ebenezar had a grandson, John born to Taylor Cary somewhere in NY
state.
Benjamin's son Nathaniel had a son John born to him in Dutchess County, NY
So John is a pretty common name in the family.
I suggest that you consult "The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New
York: An Historical and Genealogical Study of All the 18th Century Settlers in the
Patent." Volume #3 has a chapter on the Cary family in Dutchess County. Have you
looked for John Carys in the Federal census returns for NY state?
