Message Board Post:
I am wondering if the Thomas Cary, who appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses of Pendleton
District SC was the Thomas "Ceary" who bought land in Spartanburg District in
1786 and sold it in 1789. (The "e" may be a part of an elaborate "C.")
I am using abstracts, but have ordered the deeds. Some Clary researchers interpreted the
name as Clary, but other evidence seems to contradict this. I could not find a Thomas
Car(e)y, Clar(e)y, Ceary, Seary or similar spellings in the 1790 census of Spartanburg. A
Thomas "Carey" also appears on the Spartanburg census in 1800, but is almost
certainly Thomas Clary.
