Thanks for the lookup. I re-checked the PA censuses in more detail and found the
following.
In 1790 a Lemuel Carey on page 148 of Luzerne County, PA.
In 1800 a Lemuel Carey on page 383 of Luzerne County (Nicholson Twp - now a part of
Wyoming County), PA.
In 1810 there are no Lemuel's listed, but there are 3 Samuel's (Carey/Cary)
listed, two in Luzerne County and one in Bucks County. I have found that sometimes an
index will write Samuel, while the papers will actually read Lemuel ('S' and
'L' look alike, but you can usually distinguish an 'e' from an
'a'). I will have to look at the microfilms to see.
In 1820 there is a Samuel and a Samuel Jr. Carey in Luzerne, Pittston Twp, PA, and also a
Samuel Cary in Bucks County, Newtown Twp., PA.
The L. Cary that you found in 1810 in Niagara County seems interesting. I know that US
219/119 runs from Buffalo to Punxsutawney, and I'm pretty sure that it is an old road
that was used by the Indians. Lemuel could have migrated south over that road to get into
Punxsutawney. I'll check this stuff when I get access to NY census microfilms.
