Dear cousins,
I was recently offered the following document relating to a 17th c. John Cary
who was from a Nantucket branch. See the full description below. I will not be
buying it since it is not my line. However if anyone on the list is interested,

DOCUMENT TEXT:
"At a Town Council hodlen withing and for the Town of Providence the 7th day of
January, 1815. Present: William Richmond, Pres.
Young Seamens
Oliver Earle
Stephen Tillinghast
Ordered that John Cary now residing in this Town be brought before this Town in
order for his examination respecting his place of settlement.
John Cary is examined respecting his place of settlement he says that he was
born in the Town of Alexandria in the State of Virginia, That he has resided in
this towon and sailed from here several voyages as a mariner, that he has been a
soldier in the American Seafvice and served in the Northern Frontier where he
was wounded. That he lived in Philadelphia - He says his Grandfather John Cary
lived in Nantucket - where he has other relatives living - they being poor he
does not like to be burdensome to them. That he now resides in this Town having
no settled home and works for a living whereven he can find anything to do. He
says his father, William Cary resides in New York and that his father never
owned any real Estate to his knowledge (End of document)
This document measures approx. 8 ;x s12 3/4 in. is on laid paper & is the
original minutes of this council meeting...the reverse contains recorded entries
of other council matters...mosty of financial concers..however one interesting
entry..."Ordered that Chole Jackson and Pheobe Potter now in the Bridewell
(Jail) be ;released therefrom tomorrow morning the 2nd instant"....(Obviously
these individuals were transients or lawbreakers who were be removed from the
Town)"
