Sarah Elizabeth Cary who married Marshall Kirksey was born and died in Carroll Co., TN.
She is listed with her parents on page 181b of the 1870 census of the county and with
Marshall and their children on page 180a of the 1880 census, page 173 of the 1900 census,
and page 214 b of the 1910 census. Carl Cary's list of their children is excellent.
Sarah was a seventh generation direct descendant of Thomas Cary who migrated from Virginia
to Maryland and patented Cary’s Adventure on Monie Creek in Somerset County in 1666.
Beginning with Thomas (1620-1687) and his wife Jane, Sarah’s Cary line continues through
William Sr. (1668-1734) and Elizabeth; Levin Sr. (1709-1783) wife unknown; William Sr.
(1740-1783) and Margaret; Samuel (1774-1818) who moved from Maryland to North Carolina and
wife Rachel; Thomas (1783-1850) and wife Elizabeth Roberts; and Sarah’s parents, William
W. Cary (1816-1894) and Sarah M. Johnson (1830 - ) who migrated from North Carolina to
Carroll Co., Tennessee.
Cary’s Adventure, a 306 acre plantation, has remained intact although the grandson of the
immigrant sold it to a man who built a three-story mansion beside the creek. The current
owners, a Swiss couple, operate it as a world-class bed and breakfast named Waterloo
Country Inn. The giant sycamores beside the meandering tidal creek must be at least 300
years old. They were probably planted by the original owner.
Descendants of Thomas Cary and other Cary/Carey families meet in Ocean City, Maryland each
October for a weekend which includes family reunions plus a special service and lunch at
Carey's United Methodist Church on land donated by the family.
I am trying to identify as many of Thomas Cary’s descendants as possible and can be
contacted as Matawadave(a)aol.com to exchange family information.
