Hi Lucy.
I don't know if you can qualify this information as being a miracle, but the
James Cary you're referring to is James Cary of Nottoway River, as noted in
the book by Fairfax Harrison called The Virginia Cary's
(1736 one James Cary patented lands on the Nottoway River, then in
Nansemond, describing himself as "of Isle of Wight" and in 1738 and 1740
adds to these lands (Va. Land Records, xvii 143, xviii, 50 and xix, 752) In
1753 the Vestry of the upper parish of Nansemond established a chapel of
ease on the lands of James Cary "over Nottoway." (See parish register.) In
1759 James Cary is paid for maintaining a ferry.)(This information is an
excerpt from the book by Fairfax Harrison)
Note: Francis Wills died on January 9, 1748, Isle of Wight County. His will
was recorded December 14, 1749 and was witnessed by Robert Bygrave, James
Cary and James Cary Jr.

Adams Chapman.
18th February, 1757. James Cary, the elder, of Nansemond County in the
colony of Virginia. Granted to his son James Cary the yonger, of the county
of Northampton, North Carolina. A tract of land containing 150 acres. The
same tract purchased from Matthew Williams and recorded February,1745.
I have much more on this father and son and others of this family, but it's
in bits and pieces. As you pointed out there are some burnt counties in
Virginia; Nansemond was one of them.
I would be very interested in exchanging information with you, especially
the connection to the Wills Family. I did know that Emanuel Wills married
Elizabeth Cary, however I did not know until now that Temperance Cary was
married to Francis Wills. That is to say that I didn't know that Temperance
was a Cary. I also have a note about a John Wills marrying a Betsy Cary in
1790.

Subject: Re: [CARY] ROLL CALL
Thanks for the chance to do a roll call. I have 2 Cary lines. They
supposedly "meet" each other, but I am lacking positive proof at one point
on each one.
I have Temperance Cary/Carey married to Francis Wills/Wells in the Tidewater
area of Virginia. Their marriage is estimated about 1720. My line to this
point is pretty solid. I have a researcher's record (from about 40 or 50
years ago)that says Temperance is the daughter of James Cary - which is
quite likely as he signs papers associated with her, as well as James Cary,
Jr. who is thought to be her brother. The record I was given is very
specific with sources on the Wills line, but just adds this info as an
"aside" on the Cary line, so there are no sources for what he gives as the
ancestry. (I have found the sources I mentioned for James.) The ancestry
given is that James is the son of Miles Cary, who is the son of Mylles Cary
and Anne Taylor. I can make a case for James being Temperance's father, but
I cannot yet make it for Miles being James' father.
On this same line, Francis Wills father is Miles Wills. Miles Wills is the
son of Emmanuel Wills and Elizabeth Cary. Elizabeth is the daughter of the
Mylles Cary and Anne Taylor listed above. The proof problem here is from
Francis to Miles Wills. I have been told that Miles' gravestone lists the
names of his 2 sons. But I have no idea where that grave is nor how recently
it was placed. I would like some sort of proof, although many pedigrees give
this data. It is hard where there were so many records burned.
Now I will sit back and wait for the miracle of someone out there who has my
needed proof to reply to the list... :-)
Lucy
