Cary Family Tree
Beverly Cartm who was of Irish and English descent, was born in West Virginia about
1792. He grew to manhood in West Virginia and married Sarah Weare, who was of German
descent, her parents being born in Germany. In about 1830 he, with his wife and four
children moved to Saline County Missouri.
To this union was born seven children, John, William, Daniel, Miles, Lilburn (our
great grandfather) , Delilah and Sarah.
Miles Cary was murdered in April, 1861.
Daniel, with several relatives and friends, went to California in 1849. He died
there.
Lilburn Cary, the fifth of this union, was born in Saline County, Missouri in 1831.
He married Sarah Margaret Brookings, who was of English descent. Her father, William
Brookings, was born in New York City. Later he moved from New York to Missouri where he
made acquaintance with Margaret Lewis and married her.
Margaret Lewis' parents owned and operated a negro plantation, farming much land.
When her father died he left William Brookings the plantation and twelve negroes.
William Brookings, being quite prejudice against slavery, gave them their freedom. Others
took up the negroes so he made arrest and stated you can not make property out of human
beings. He took the case to court and it was pending when the Civil War was declared
which threw the case out of court. Later William Brookings said he wanted to live on free
soil and moved to Linn County, Kansas. He helped build the town of West Point. The first
houses and buildings were build of black walnut lumber. He and his son in law, Lilburn
Cary sawed the lumber.
William Brookings and his wife, Margaret, had eight children. Their names were:
Virginia, Adeline, Loucindy, Octave, Sarah Margaret, Lucy, Jane, Robert and Charles.
Lilburn Cary owned and operated a freighting business with four yoke of oxen. He
lived and reared his family of eight children, William Riley, Charles Robert, John Bogs,
Cordelia, Josephine (mama), Louisa, Lucy and Allie, around Saline County, Missouri. In
1877 they moved to Harper County, Kansas and filed a claim on land one mile south and one
mile west of what is now Spring High School. He proved the land and sold it, then moved
to Kiowa Kansas and built and operated a hotel. He had a prosperous business until his
health failed and he was forced to sell.
Three of this family are still living- William Riley, John Bogs, and Allie.
William Riley, the oldest son of this union, was born in 1852 in Saline County,
Missouri. He married Elizabeth Helen Trumbo in 1876 at Brownsville, Missouri and lived
there three years. He moved to Caldwell, Kansas in 1879 and lived there one year, Then
they moved to Harper County, Kansas and filed on land seven miles south of Anthony, or
what is now known as the J.P. Henderson farm. He purchased the tract of land south of it
from his brother, John, and the quarter east of his place from his sister, Josephine.
They had a family of thirteen children. Their names were: Maud, Charles Earl, Arthur
John, William Earnest, Olin, Ross R, Arminta Louisa, Sarah Margaret, Annabel, Walter
Riley, Thomas McKinley, who died in infancy, Eula Mae and Harry Elmer.
William Earnest (Bub) died in 1920,
Walter Cary married Marie Stino and had one child, Bonnie Marie. Walter was injured
in a baseball game on Decoration Day and died two weeks later, June 13, 1927, His family
now resides in Hollywood, California.
Maud was born in Saline County, Missouri and moved to Kansas with her parents when a
small child. She married William Br? and had a family of seven children, all of whom were
born in Harper County, Kansas, except one. The children's names are Gertrude, Ethel,
Raymond, Riley, Melvin, Oscar and Vernon. Maud and william now live in Pueblo, Colorado.
Gertrude married Orvis Farmer and had a family of three: Evelyn, Ross and Robert,
Gertrude, Ross and Robert have passed away. Evelyn married Carl Cooley and lives in Los
Angeles, California.
Ethel married George Webster and lives in Pueblo Colorado, they have two children:
Donald and Shirley. Donald married Ethel Jones and has one child, Marsha, which is the
beginning of the fifth generation now living. Shirley married Donald Drummond and has one
child, Albert Wayne.
Raymond married Nellie Dunlap and lives on a ranch near Salida, Colorado, they have
on daugher, Eileen.
Riley married Minnie Dunlap. They had three children, Dorothy Elizabeth, Barbara
Nell, and William. Minnie, his wife died in 1927 and Dorothy died in August 1936. Later
Riley married Peggy Martinez and lives in Pueblo, Colorado.
Melvin married Mildred Lenihan and lives in Pueblo, Colorado. They have one child,
Vena Lee.\
Oscar married Ina Inman and lives in Pueblo, Colorado. They have on child Phyllis.
Vernon married Rosetta Sutton and lives in Denver, Colorado. They have one ch ild,
Vernon Walter.
Charles Earl Cary was born in Saline County, Missouri. He moved with his parents to
harper County, Kansas when a small child. He married Maud Noble and had a family of five.
Their names are: Olin, who died in infancy, Pearlie, Juanita, Harriet, at home, and
Elizabeth.
P)earlie married Annie Winnis and lives in Madison, Wisconsin. They have one child,
William Riley.
Juanita married William Musil and has one child, Sue Cary.
Elizabeth married Lloyd Schulte and lives at Anthony, Kansas.
John Arthur Cary was born in Saline County, Missouri and moved to Harper County,
Kansas with his parents. He married Ethel Dorrick. They have five children, Grace,
Bonnie, Maxine, Imogene, and Robert. Imogene and Robert are at home.
Grace married George DeVorss and lives at Liberal, Kansas.
Bonnie is living at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Maxine married Frank Groesch and lives at Corpus Christie Texas.
Olin Cary was born in Harper County, Kansas. He married Erma Peare. They had two
daughers, Thelma and Fern. Olin now lives on a ranch near Hartsel Colorado. Thelma
married Earl Parmley and has two children and lives in Enid, Oklahoma, Fern is married
and has one child. She also lives in Enid.
Ross R. Cary was born in Harper Co, Kansas. He married Clyde Johnson and has one
child, Allan, They now live in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Arminta Louisa Cary was born in Harper Co, Kansas. She married Roy N. Smith, They
have a family of ten. Helen, Elmer, Annabel, Lareba, Kenneth, Hobart, Wanda, Roy Jr.,
Walter Lee, and Melvin. All are living at home except Helen. Helen married Joe Gideon
and lives on a farm southeast of Anthony. They havve one child, Joe Wayne. Annabel
married Harold Delaporte and lives at Anthony.
Sarah Margaret Cary was born and raised in Harper Co, Kansas. She married Kinley
Burchfiel, they have three children: Thelma, Phyllis, and Burchie Lee- all living at
home.
Annabel Cary was born in Harper Co, Kansas, she married Victor Fallier and now lives
in Pueblo, Colorado. They have two daughters, DeNeese and RuFina, DeNeese married Frank
Wiklisch and lives at Pueblo. RuFina married Richard Vess and also lives at Pueblo. They
have one child Victor Richard.
Eula Mae Cary was born and reared in Harper Co, Kansas. She married Orley Fox, they
had four childrenm Velma, Jack, Gene Edward, who died in infancy, Jimmie Dean, all
living at home.
Harry Elmer Cary was born in Harper Co, Kansas. He married Pearl May and they have
two children, Charles Riley and Donna Due at home. They live in Arkansas City, Kansas.
Charles Robert Cary, brother of Filey, was born in Saline Co, Missouri. He married
Mollie Cary and they had a family of six girls, Minnie, Jessie, Bessie, Ora, Fleta and
Marie. Charles, Mollie and two daughters, Jessie and Minnie have passed away. Bessie
married Gordon Sanders and has a family, She lives in Pueblo Colorado. Ora married
Herman Kiser and with her family lives in Casper, Wyoming. Fleta married Frank Wright
and lives in Pueblo, Colorado. Marie married Marvin Johnson and lives in Hutchinson,
Kansas.
John Bogs Cary was born in Saline Co, Missouri and married Carrie Clark. They have a
family of three: Charles, Nettie and Lilburn. John and his wife, Nettie and her family
and Charles live at Enid, Oklahoma. Lilburn and his wife in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Cordelia Cary was born in Saline Co, Missouri and moved with her parents to Harper
Co, Kansas. She married Jasper Quick and reared a large family, In 1904 they moved to
California where they both passed away.
Josephine Cary (mother) was born in Saline Co, Missouri and moved with her parents to
Harper Co, Kansas. She married Henry Clay Fulton and reared a family of five children:
Sterling, Faye, Lloyd, Allie, and Mary. They moved to California about 1908. Josephine
and her husband have passed away. All the children are married and live in Los Angeles,
California, Faye, Allie and Lloyd each has one child.
Louisa Cary was born in Saline Co, Missouri and moved with her family to Kansas in
1879. She married William Reid and lived on a farm two miles south of Manchester,
Oklahoma, where they reared a family of seven: Frank, Grace, Artie, Fred, Pearl, Birdie
and Dollie. Louisa and her husband, Wiolliam, and one daughter, Birdie, have passed
away.
Frank Reid and his family lives in Wichita Kansas. They have two children:
Grace married George Beard and had one daughter, Dorothea. George passed away severl
years ago. Later she married Charles Barber and lives at Antony, Dorothea married Robert
Sturns and lives at Anthony.
Artie married John Bottis and has a family of three: Pauline, Margaretta, at home
and Evelyn. Pauline is married and lives in Winfield Kansas, Evelyn married Robert
Downing and lives in Anthony.
Pearl Reid married Jess Mundell and has two boys. They live in Wichita, Kansas.
Dollie married Loyce Gideon and lives near Manchester, Oklahoma, They have on son,
Max.
Lucy Cary was born in Saline Co, Missouri and moved with her parents to Harper Co,
Kansas in 1879. She married Price Fulton (papa brother) and had four children: Clay,
Ray, Chester, and Margaretta. Lucy passed away several years ago, Price lives in Alva
Oklahoma.
Clay is married and lives in Wichita Kansas. Ray and Chester live in Los Angeles
California. Margaretta is married and lives near Alva Oklahoma.
Allie Cary was born in Saline Co, Missouri and moved with her parents to Harper Co,
Kansas in 1879. She married Ed McAdams and lived on a farm south of Manchester Oklahoma,
where they reared a family of five, Floyd, Claud, Flora. Gerald and Maurita. Ed McAdams
and Floyd have passed away. Allie now lives at Anthony, Claud and Gerold are married and
live in Wichita Kansas. Flora is living at home and Maurita is married and lives in
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
